  • 1.  Create UnManaged Client install and change default settings (Like old grd.dat)

    Posted Jul 01, 2009 10:55 AM
Looking for a way within SEP 11 to modify settings and create an .exe or folder where the install for the unmanaged client exists. In the past we had an unsupported tool from SAV which could change a number of the settings. For example I have a large group of Portable computers that we do not own (We're a college) yet we need to install SEP in a"Unmanaged" mode but I would like to modify the install process so that the client updates every 4 hours instead of the default each day at 8:00pm. This seems like a simple request but I have not found a way to do this yet. When I create an unmanged "setup.exe" out of the management console it is not really an unmanaged client.

Any thoughts or ideas on this?

If there is no solution, I guess we can always use Microsoft's AntiVirus software.

    Thanks

    Mark

    Hi Mark,

I would suggest you to go through the administration_guide.pdf file which is located in CD1\Documentation. This pdf should clarify the settings required by you. (Page 52 onwards). Please revert in case you require further help.

Thanks I've read through this manual and creating the client as stated, still produces an unusable semi managed client that I can not change settting on.

For example, This unmanaged client still wants to get its updates from the "Managed Server" even this it is supposed to be unmanaged.

What I need is a way to ceate an install package or directory with a setup.exe or msi that I can control the settings.

While the manual at first glace would appear to work, I would challenge anyone to truly get an unmanaged "setup.exe" to work.

    Mark,

Are any of your clients managed?

    Aniket,

Your correct I have been successful in getting an "UnManaged" setup.exe exported. Thanks, I found this after posting my last message.

But my primary problem still has no solution. How can I change or modify settings in this "unmanaged client" so that instead of the default 8:00pm daily update it will be do a continuously virus update every 4 hours with a retry every 1hr?

Presently I have no method on the unmanaged setup.exe created file to change any of the default settings beyond not including some features. The old version of AntiVirus had a GAC.dat file that you could modify these settings as needed.

    Are their any options?

    Thanks

    Mark

    Mark,

It looks like you should be able to create a group that has the settings you want the unmanaged computers to have.  For example, assign a policy to the group you created that has the update frequency that you desire.  Then when you do the export to create your package you can choose to export an unmanaged client and check the box to use the policies from the group that you created.
