    1. I am trying to find out if this is possible?
    2. How can it be done?
3 If possible can the created image then be virtualised in to VMware

    Hi,

This is not a tested platform, but it depends on the file systems you have. If they are not FAT/NTFS/EXT systems it would not be possible. If it is, only way is to boot from DOS or WinPE and then running Ghost or Ghost32 manually.

If the image create is successful, then you should be able to clone it to a VMware machine but I am not sure how Novell will handle different hardware.

I know this is not very helpful, but that's the best answer come to my mind.

thankyou for coming back to me I understand that Netware uses the NetWare File System (NWFS), which is different from the file systems mentioned in your reply.
Looking around on the internet I find referances of the following product but so far I am unable to locate a copy

    Norton Ghost for NetWare

Norton Ghost for NetWare is an ideal system tool for anyone who manages, upgrades, repairs, or administers Novell NetWare servers. The entire contents of a disk or NetWare volume can be copied from one disk to another, or it can be copied to a disk image file. That image file can then be used as a template to create copies of the original disk. Norton Ghost for NetWare was developed to handle the complex partitions, volumes, and files in Novell NetWare. Norton Ghost for NetWare is the very first product to fully support Novell NetWare.

or even ServerMagic 4.0 for NetWare both of which lead to the symantec www site but I am unable to find any details?

    Thankyou for your assistance

    Giles

I did some of the work reverse-engineering NWFS for the Netware product, and the work done on it was completely separate from the rest of Ghost (to a large extent because it was set up to run both at DOS-level and as an NLM). It never got integrated into the main Ghost product and was discontinued some years ago since it never sold sufficiently well to justify any continued investment, especially since Novell themselves were moving away from NWFS.

thankyou for coming back to me much appreciated.
We as a company are in the process of upgrading our old netware 5.1 servers to a much later version of Netware where this problem will simply not be an issue. But we need a way to effectively copy our old servers before this migration can take place. Is there any way I can get hold of a copy of this software so we are in a position that we can move in to the 21st century?
It would just be very useful to have our older Novell servers available during our migration process even if they are just Virtual servers
    Thankyou Giles
