Creating individual "automatic cancelation" schedules for individual backup jobs

Created: 15 May 2013 | 7 comments

I have a robotic tape library with the tapes all partitioned out for specific jobs in backup exec. For example I have 4 full weekly jobs that each run one designated week each month, a daily incrimental job that runs daily, and a weekly offsite backup job that gets sent to offsite storage once a week.

I need to be able to tell each individual/group of jobs to auto cancel after a certain ammount of time if the job has not completed. I can set this option under the "Priority and Availability" settings in the job properties, however if I set this option for one job it copies over to ALL jobs.

This normally wouldn't be a problem, however we have the jobs assigned to run at specific times so they are not interfering with other non-backup exec backup jobs such as database backups, co-lo replications, and VM backups/snapshots.

For the life of me I am unable to find any documentation on this nor any options that will allow me to seperate these schedules between jobs. Is there any way to do this or am I chasing a wild goose?

You can cancel individual jobs after a certain period.  It is in the job properties.  See below.

That is exactly what I am talking about. Setting that cancellation option on one job sets that same cancellation option and time interval across all jobs. I need each individual job to have it's own cancelation time as it will be different for each job.

In my example above, the cancellation will only affect the job, Incremental 2.  It will not affect other jobs like the Full backup or Incremental 1 job in the same set of jobs.

If that was the case I wouldn't have had to make this post requesting assistance. I'm using Backup Exec 2010 R3, and if you set the cancellation on ANY job it sets the exact same cancellation across ALL jobs.

This may be different in the version you are using, but that solution does not work in backup exec 2010 R3.

I was working on the assumption that you are using BE 2012 because you have tagged your problem as such.

For BE 2010, you can set the automatic cancellation in the job property.

Ok, once again, how many different ways do you want me to tell you that what you're telling me is WRONG.

If I set the cancelation option on one job as you are suggesting it applies that option ACORSS ALL BACK UP JOBS. ALL OF THEM. Not one, not two, ALL OF THEM.

...behave! Stop SHOUTING in the forums, and understand that this is frequented mainly by non-Symantec employees, and is hence mainly a community forum.

Some Symantec technical guys do hop on and offer a lot of very valid advice and information...but this is generally community-based.

If you don't get an answer you want, read the admin guide or log a call with Symantec support...
