  • 1.  Creating a Monitor Policy for Altiris DS

    Posted Dec 09, 2013 11:40 AM

I would like to create a monitoring policy that watches the axengine.log file for (lack of) updates every x minutes.

If no updates are seen within x minutes, then execute a task to kill axengine.exe, and stop all DS related services and restart them in order.

Does anyone have any thoughts or existing policies they can share?

    Thank you ahead of time.

    Scott

    Hi shousem,

    a few questions I have

    1. What version of Altiris Monitor Solution product you're using for monitoring?

    2. Do you perform agent-based monitoring? (Monitor agent plug-in is installed on each server)

    3. What is a list of all DS services and its order?

    Thanks,

    IP.

    Hi Igor,

    1. What version of Altiris Monitor Solution product you're using for monitoring?

    SMP 7.1 SP2

    2. Do you perform agent-based monitoring? (Monitor agent plug-in is installed on each server)

Yes, agent based monitoring is installed.

    3. What is a list of all DS services and its order?

    Service Stopping Order is:

    Hi Igor,

The axengine.log file is located in the default location of "C:\Program Files\Altiris\eXpress\Deployment Server"

    Thank you.

    And another question:

    • Is there any rotations for this axengine.log file performs or there is only singe axengine.log?
    • For example:

    axengine.log

    axengine1.log

    axengine2.log

Is it correct numeration of axengine.log files shown abobe or they looks differently?

    Thanks,

    IP.

There was a wrong polling interval in attached policy. I've changed it to 20 minutes.

    Does it work as expected?

I've created such monitor policy and included there to monitor axengine*.log files in "C:\Program Files\Altiris\eXpress\Deployment Server" directory.

    Summary:

    • Metric will polls after every 1200 seconds (20 minutes)
    • If axengine*.log isn't changed during 60 minutes then rule will be triggered
    • When rule triggers then:

► Alert will appears in Event Console

► Stop/Start DS Services tasks will be automatically executed

► You will receive email with appropriate information about this event.

I've attached this xml so you can try to import it on your server and try to monitor.

    Note:

Don't forget to set your mail address if you want to receive information when this rule will be triggered
