Creating a script to run before Altiris installs Windows Updates

  • 1.  Creating a script to run before Altiris installs Windows Updates

I've been handed the job of administering an Altiris Patch Distribution system (version 6.0 at this point).  The person who was the previous administrator moved on and I've had zero training other than a few documents he wrote to do the tasks he had already defined.  The client machines to which I'm pushing the Windows Updates run software that performs some process controls 24/7.  We currently push the updates to the machines through Altiris and provide an install prompt to allow users to perform a controlled shutdown of the processes then install the patches and restart the computer.  I'd like to set this process up so that it can occur automatically.  To do so, I'd like to set up Altiris to execute a batch routine that I would develop to stop the process and wait 20 minutes (to ensure everything is clear) then install the Windows patches and finally execute another batch routine to restart Windows (Altiris doesn't alway restart).  I'm told I can do so by setting up a Sequential Software Delivery Job and my own scripts but I have no idea where to start with doing so in Altiris.  Any help to get me started would be greatly appreciated!
