  • 1.  Creating a Windows 7 image and using MS Sysprep causing issues...

    Posted May 22, 2010 10:26 PM
We are creating Windows7 Images and once the image is complete Sysprep is performed, here is where the problem lies...  I have run the solution
    1. Empty the Registry Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection\SMC\SYLINK\SyLink\HardwareID=""
    2. Delete the file: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\HWID\sephwid.xml
    3. If present, delete: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection\SMC\SYLINK\SyLink\SySoftk
    4. Prevent a restart of the original host before creation of the image (shutdown is OK, but after startup both Key and File will be re-created)
The problem here is once this is all done Sysprep is run and the imaged PC IS connected to the network during the Sysprep, and even though the above steps WERE performed, the client can STILL communicate with the SEPM server, thus bringing me back to square 1. I performed the steps above and the SMC service WAS stopped, but once the Sysprep was run, the SMC service MUST have reinitiated and connected to the SEPM server. Once we received an order of 50 PC's. 50 showed up, but then 20 mins later, ONLY one was left. I was thinking the BEST thing for me to do is to switch the SMC service from Automatic to Manual and ask the people who are rolling it out to the clients to switch it back to Automatic, and turn the service back on.

Not even a reinstall will correct this issue after the fact, which is something I really do not like in SEP, with SAV, once you removed it, it was GONE. With this, it continues to KEE P the same HWID information even WITH an uninstall and reinstall.

Basically, the question is, HOW IS THIS DONE when doing a sysprep, and how to I prevent communication from the client to the server during Sysprep so that HWID's are NOT generated. The above solution is a good solution, but it really does not apply in this case.

    Thank you.

Even though the services ARE stopped when I do this, once the PC is rebooted for the Sysprep all services are back to life...

If the client is able to contact back the SEPM after removing the keys and file ,it will be get created back.So you can do this in another network which it cannot contact back the SEPM,at least in another subnet and do not provide any gateway......

Try this also . In IIS manager symatec website properties--->directory security--->IP address and Domain Name restrictions and the IP so that will not be able to communicate to server.Later you can remove when req....

If you put that PC in the deny list it will not be able to contact the manager. So that it will be able to create that file and reg key.....

    It Says

By Default all computers will be *Denied

    Except --Granted xxxxx

So if you want to block it then it should say other way round.

Yes you have denied connection to all clients except the one/s you have entered manually

    what you have done

    DENY ALL
GRANTED xxxx ( the one you have manually entered)

What you need to do is opposite

    ALLOW ALL
DENY xxxx ( the one you have manually entered)

The Client and server, but it STILL picks up a HW ID and SEPWID...??? Is this ok??? Will the other PC's that contain this image have the same HWID and SEPWID??? Will it cause problems???

Once again you double check the IP address/Host Name you put in the deny list.It should be problematic PC.If not helps I think only way left out is by keeping it in the other network so that it cannot reach SEPM....

I will just try with the services turned off, and if THAT does not work, I will switch it to manual. I feel that this is truly a flaw and should really be addressed by Symantec...

The issue is that Sysprep does not work properly with Windows 7.  We are having similar issues with the HWID with some of our W7 machines.  What our Site Support Team is having to do is set the Machine settings after the machine has been imaged.  We are having issues with other settings not coming out as well.

I would suggest writing a quick script to be run on the machines after the image process that deletes the HWID just to make sure it is working properly.

I really do not like Windows 7 much at all. It is great for the end user, but is BARELY Admin friendly.

The IIS was very effective for communication, but even when it was not communicating, it was STILL generating the files. I was VERY displeased with Symantec's fix, although it did work, it is NOT a fix that can be utilized on multiple machines. The fix could only be done one by one, and even in that case I had a hard time with the SMC service stopping and starting...

I had the same sort of issue with a bunch of my XP clients, so I made this script to help with it.
You'll probably have to tailor it to your environment, but it might be able to help.

    @echo off
    cd\

    echo.
    echo deleting sephwid.xml...

    if exist "%programfiles%\common files\symantec shared\HWID\sephwid.xml" del "%programfiles%\common files\symantec shared\HWID\sephwid.xml" || echo SEPHWID.XML not found!

    echo.
echo backing up registry to c:\reg_backup.regbackup...
    regedit /e c:\reg_backup.regbackup
    echo.
    echo deleting HardwareID registry key...
    echo.
REG DELETE "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection\SMC\Sylink\Sylink" /v HardwareID /f ||echo Error: Could not locate HardwareID reg key!
    echo.

    PING 1.1.1.1 -n 1 -w 5000 >NUL

    echo.
    echo restarting smc service...
net stop "Symantec Endpoint Protection" ||echo ERROR: Could not locate service
    net start "Symantec Endpoint Protection"
