Creation of EV Test Lab for Upgrade

This issue has been solved. See solution.

I wish to upgrade my version of Enterprise Vault from 8. SP 5 to 9 and wanted to know how to go about creating a clone for a test lab.

I don't know the first thing about Exchange and only got involved because I am familiar with SQL Server.

Do I need to isolate the test lab from the live network / domain, perhaps in a virtual environment?

Is a restore of the production system the way forward or do I create a brand new 8.0.5 instance?

We've never done a restore of EV before so it would be useful as part of a DR exercise.

Many Thanks in advance.

If you plan to have test lab , it should ideally be Identicall to your production enviornment at least the configuration part I.e same version of Sql and Exchange etc. The main purpose of the lab would be to experiment before making change the production enviornment . You may create a new setup or you may try restore. You have DR excerise as a best practice to be sure you are backing yup all the things needed.

Hi Ravi,

If you are not familiar with Enterprise Vault, a DR procedure would be your best friend. You can setup a DR environment following the DR procedure from this technote:

Symantec Enterprise Vault 8.0 SP5 - Administrator's Guide
http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC4711 (Page 335)

You need to isolate the environment to prevent any archiving from your Exchange production servers. Then, you can test upgrading EV to 9. This is the upgrade guide for Enterprise Vault 9.0.5:

Symantec Enterprise Vault 9.0.5 - Release Notes
http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC6417

My recommendation, read these guides to get more information about Enterprise Vault or get a consultant onsite to assist you with the upgrade.
