  • 1.  Cross Domain Software Licencing

    Hello all,

I will give a bit of background first before explaining my issue/query.

Basically over the last year or so my company has merged with 4 others, and i am now in a team which as part of our job, is to manage all assets, software licences, plus some other things, and Altiris (7.1 SP2) was chosen as the tool to do a lot of this, as it already existed in the largest company of the 4 merged.

The 4 companies are spread across 3 domains, no full trust is in place but we have got around this all ok and all machines are reporting in.

    For demonstration purposes lets say:

    Domain 1 - Company A+B

    Domain 2 - Company Y

    Domain 3 - Company Z

Now to the real issue. Each company is still kept seperate in terms of licencing and software purchases, so in terms of auditing we could be asked "how many licences/installs of Adobe Pro 10 are there in company Y" and would need to be able to show how they are split. This is easy for the actual current installs, but for the purchased licences themselves i cant quite decide how to go about it.

We have all of the data in a raw format, and currently the licence purchase data is imported for Company A+B via an import rule pointing at a spreadsheet. This works really well and we can see all the licence amounts in the correct places, but wont work going forward. As the software catalogue groups all of the 3 domains together, (so for Adobe Pro 10 for eg we see the total across all domains) how do we "map" the licences to the correct place?

Hopefully this makes sense, any questions i will do my best to answer, and thank you in advance :)

You will need to use Asset Management as this allows you to create license objects, associate them with actual license as well as with inventoried software and machines.
