Here is an interesting one.

The facts:

• I have two custom data classes
• These data classes are only for computers
• The fields are updated by editing resources from within the SMP
• These data classes are NOT custom inventory classes (if they were the answer would be more obvious i.e. I'm doing it wrong)

The problem:

• The data in the two custom data classes are no longer associated with the computers with which the data used to be associated. In other words the guid in the _resourceguid field of the custom data class no longer matches the guid returned by the vcomputer view. I should note this is not for all servers with data in the custom data class only for some.

Obvious observation:

• Some guids changed

The unknowns:

• Why the GUIDs changed - At this point I am assuming there was a resource merge since logging seems to have ruled out magic
• How to determine GUID change history to try to track this down. I looked at resource history through the SMP but it had nothing.
• Why only some GUIDs changed

Any help would be appreciated.

If it was a resource merge, it would be in the resource merge event table. You can view that table by going to Resource Manager ->View->Events->Resource Merge Events. If there was no resource merge then that table will not show up in Resource Manager.

There is no Resource Merge Event at that location. I looked at a server whose GUID I know changed too.

The only time a GUID would change is when some hardware changes occurr (serial/MAC address) or when the computer name changes. On 7.1 and above, now computer name changes don't even get me a new GUID as they did in 6.

If you look up the orphaned guids in the vItem table, do they come up with anything?

I haven't looked. I will check that out and let you know what I find.

vitem doesn't turn up anything when I search for a GUID.
