Regarding your File filtering rules and wanting to make exceptions.  Please note the following.

File Filtering will scan all inbound, outbound, and internal email attachments for violations to the rule in question.

File filtering rule is the only one that you can create / customize your own match list, and depending on your companies security this is the rule I would typically recommend as it also scans within container (i.e... Zip, rar...) files for violations.

However, when using any of the file filtering rules, there are no exceptions for users, and releasing the emails requires the administrator to disable the rule, release the email, then re-enable the rule.  In essence, using the file filtering rule is a high security method, that requires extra steps to allow the unwanted content into your network.

    Content Filtering Rules.

These rules are fully customizable and able to scan inbound, outbound, internal, or any combination of the three.  These rules also allow for exceptions for specific users.  However the content filtering rule, will not scan within containers, but we still scan for viruses within the containers.  There are already match lists within the program with audio / video / exe files that can be combined into one match list that you create and associate it to your newly created content filtering rule.  Understand however that the content does not scan within the container.  (Example.  You create a content filtering rule to block all .txt extensions for inbound email. I attempt to send an email with the .txt - this is captured and triggers the policy.  However if I zip up the .txt the content filtering will not trigger the rule, as the attachment is a .zip and not a .txt)

Depending on your companies security policy, please select the appropriate type.  If you stay with file filtering rules, I would recommend using the file filtering rule so that you can create your own match list of the specific file attachments that you do not want passed through the network.  However, there is nothing within the Mail Security program at this time regarding File Filtering to exclude any users.

    I hope that this helps.

    Thank You,

    Scott
