De-duplication folder storage space reclaimation

Dear All,

We are using BE 2010R2 with de-duplication option. servers data are backup to the de-dupe folder before it is vaulted to tape. De-dupe option in R2 has significant improvement, however we are still not well understand on the de-dupe folder storage space control. We have encountered de-dupe folder full (15% threshold) every 2 months, we have to do the manual way of space reclamation (http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH130103) or remove the folder and recreate one. The process of reclamation is very time consuming.

We have done some monitoring and realize that our de-dupe storage is more than sufficient for 4-5 weeks backup. Our retention period for the media is 2 weeks. The backup process so far has been done for 4 weeks; daily change is approximately 30GB per day. So it is normal to see the storage used space growth by 30GB per day after its initial full backup for the first 2 weeks. However we still notice the used space still continue to grow like as it is after 3rd and 4th week. Is this normal as the storage seems to be full in 1 – 2 weeks’ time.

According to our understanding, there is automatic   reclamation process scheduled at 12:20AM and 12:20PM. However we have backup job running at both schedules. Is this the cause of the problem? If so, is there a way to reschedule the automated reclamation process?

Sorry for my English, your help is very important to us.

Thanks

Hello Yan,

Is it possible to adjust the backups so that they dont run at the time of Automatic Reclamation Process.

Because the Automatic Reclamation Process schedule (12:20 AM and 12:20 PM) can not be changed as it is not user schedulable.

Thanks,

-Sush...

Hope this piece of Information Helps you... and if it does then mark this response as Solution....!!!

I see, it is bit difficult to adjust because 12AM - 7AM is our golden time for server backup. 12PM - 1PM is office lunch break and it is best time for the log backup. We have number of time between 1PM - 8PM the media server just sitting idling. That is why I have this ideal.

thanks

Hello Yan,

Probably you can try to schedue your backup at around 12:45 AM and PM so that it will give atleast 25 minutes buffer to do the Automatic Reclaimation process....

Thanks,

Noted with thanks, if no

Noted with thanks, if no choice we have to do necessary adjustment. FYI, our night backup started 10PM due to the long backup windows. I beleive there is not way to schedule the backup job hold during the auto reclaimation process. By the way, I just with to check if 25min is sufficient for the process? According to our experience in the manul process, it usually take few hours. Also I hope Symantec can consider do some improvement in this area e.g. allow customer to adjust best schedule for the reclaimation.

regards

Hi all,   Just wish to

Hi all,

Just wish to feedback at my enquiry here. We have purposely hold all jobs and leave the backup exec server idling for more than 3 days. However the storage recliamation didn't automatically run as per schedule. Anything that we miss out or configured wrongly?

regards

You could run manual scripts

You could run manual scripts to kick off the process during the day.

There is an online portal, save yourself the long hold times. Create ticket online, then call in with ticket # in hand :-) http://mysupport.symantec.com "We backup data to restore, we don't backup data just to back it up."
