We plan on decommissioning a lot of PC's, and part of the process is to boot into PXE and wipe the disk, then power down.

Is there any way to delete the machine from altiris console at the end of this (otther than manually) to free up the license?

I don't think so, but I'll be following this thread to find out if anyone else has tips.

We have techs right click on machines and add them to a static "waiting for retirement" filter.  Then once a day or every few days I mark those computers asset status as retired (can do in bulk from filter, so it saves me from looking them up), and then I delete the retired machines in bulk a few days later from another saved filter (all machines set to status retired).

I think you can safely just delete them and skip the retirement step but someone in support told me you should retire and then the next day after overnight processes complete do the delete.

You could use some report / filter to collect all computers which have successfully run the wipe job and then using some method described in the followin thread to "bulk" delete.

Or you create some script or workflow using ASDK to delete the computer once the wipe is complete.

I never recommend deleting the asset from the DB as you lose the history of the device.  Retired or disposed machines aren't supposed to use a license but we have seen retired still use some deployment licenses. If you need to, you can setup a CMDB rule to bulk update existing resources with the option "Deleted permanatly from the CMDB"

We're not really concerned about the history of the PC. I wanted to take out the 'human' element of marking a machine a retired/disposed/deleted. Relying on local techs to always delete machines from the console is not ideal.

Looks like it cant be done, which i a shame. Still - i'm moving jobs and will never have to touch Altiris again. Woo hoo, life just got a little bit better :-)
