  • 1.  Decrypting .xml file from another device using password

    Hi All,

This might be a common issue, however, I have not been able to find a concrete solution to it from web. The scenario goes like this -

    • I copy few files from my system (Windows 7) to an external USB device.
    • Since SEE is installed on the system, I'm prompted for a password to encrypt the file, before it's copied.
    • I connect the USB device to another system (MacOSX), which doesn't have SEE installed on it.

    Question:

Since I know the password that was used to encrypt the file, how can I decrypt the same? Do I need to install the full SEE suite, or is there a utility from symantec (a barebones commandline version, maybe), which I can download, and get the file decrypted?

Appreciate any help here, that can get me back my data.

when you create a client package or set GPO you can include the "copy access utility" which enables a user to utilize and access encrypted files on that device from a pc without SEE on it.

Thanks for the response, however, I would like to know if there is a way in which I could use my password and .xml file, to generate the original file. I haven't used the copy access utility, and the original system is no longer with me. All that I have with me right now are -

    • A .xml file, which is an encrypted .zip file.
    • password that was used to encrypt the .zip into .xml.

If you could list down an approach that would help me get back the .zip file, that would be awesome!

    Have a nice day!

hi, unfortunatly there would not be a workaround in this scenario, if you can locate an endpoint with SEE that would be a good way to approach this scenario here. This is part of how the program is designed and is functioning correctly, part of the reason some admins do not allow copying the access utility to a removable device, so that files are not taken outside of the organization and accessed after.

If you locate a SEE endpoint, copy the files from the device locally, update the SEE client package to include the RS access util, then copy the files back, allowing ease of access on an endpoint with no SEE

If I'm correctly understanding what you mentioned, the following could help, right?

    • Locate another system that has SEE installed on it.
    • Connect the USB to that system.
    • Locate the file, right-click to decrypt it.
    • SEE should ask me for a password, and the password that I used to encrypt should help.

If this is correct, is there a trialware, barebones version available that would do the trick?

this would be one way to try, as far as locating the software it may be best to contact symnatec support(1 (800) 721-3934) or customer care directly
