This issue has been solved. See solution.

NBU 7.5.0.5

we already have dedup from puredisk to tape. now i'm thinking for the sake of redundancy, can i configure another dedup pool such that this dedup pool is another server somewhere on my network? is it advisable? anyone doing the same? best practice perhaps?

You can have another de-dupe pool but it is best to be on another Media Server

Easiest would be to use MSDP but it depends what you want to do as if you are currently using PureDisk (itself rather than actually MSDP) there are restrictiosn about duplicating between them

It you would want to duplicate both ways then use PureDisk, if you want to duplicate from the new one to the existing one you can use MSDP

For full redundancy setup another Master and Media Server with a PureDisk Pool and use AIR

Do bear in mind that PureDisk seems to have a limited life span now (apporaching its end of life) so plan your future carefully

Hope this helps

whoa! that's an eye opener. our setup is barely a year old only. where can i find the doc that refers to that so i may show management?

back to my question, to make it simple i just want to have a backup of my backup. on random access device. the tape is purely archival.

From the 6.6.5 Release Notes:

PureDisk end-of-life notification
PureDisk 6.6.5 is the final release of PureDisk software. The PureDisk end-of-life
does not affect the future deduplication appliance releases that are based on this
software technology.
PureDisk software will be supported by Symantec until the last day of September,
2014.
Users seeking an exception or extension should move to PureDisk 6.6.5 software
release and contact your Symantec support or sales representative.
Users seeking a replacement will be required to migrate to a 52xx appliance and
NetBackup software. Contact your Symantec support or sales representative for
more information about the migration procedure.

***EDIT***

Chris mentions it here too on this PD forum sticky:

If you do not need optimised de-duplication then you can use MSDP or Advanced disk and just add an extra step to your Storage Lifecycle Policies - your data will then be re-hydrated and duplicated across the network to the other storage device.

If you need to use Optimised duplication then it needs to go to another PureDisk Pool

Sorry about breaking the EOL news!
