Dedup Storage shows 70% used space even after deleting all backup sets

Created: 26 Apr 2013 • Updated: 29 Apr 2013 | 6 comments

Despite all the backup sets have been deleted from the dedup storage, BE storage tab is still reporting that Dedupe is almost 70% full.

I have waited for couple days and even manually tried to reclaim the space but still no luck.

How can i make that 70% storage available again?

I am running BE 2012, and dedupe is on ISCSI

Hi Varick

This is Storage Foundation forums group. So we may not have answers for your questions. Maybe you post the question on wrong place ?

Deleting backups does not free up space as the dedupe technology works on containers that pre-allocacte space up front as they are created, and do not clean themselves up.  THough there is a once a week maintenance task that can consolidate the containers, and you can run it manually too.

Check the KB site for info on garbage collection and containers.

I ran garbage collection commands and they seem to reclaim few GB's of space only.

I have been running cataloging on this Dedupe storage. Even though cataloging fails every time with the error below, they show up some backup sets which later i can delete. This way i now have 30% space left to free up. I guess i just will have to run catalog command multiple times and then remove backup sets as they show up.

An inconsistency was encountered on the storage media in Deduplication disk storage:4.

You can manually run a compaction too.
