DeDuplication Engine Service PReventing logon to the server

Created: 15 Feb 2013 • Updated: 18 Feb 2013 | 3 comments
This issue has been solved. See solution.

When we boot our MMS the DeDuplication Engine Service stays "Starting" and prevents logon to the server.

We cannot stop the service, and a reboot just repeats the problem.

BackupExec 2012 and Windows 2008 Rs 64 Bit.

The Deduplication Engine service can potentially take some time to start up, depending on the contents of your deduplication storage.  If you change the service startup mode to delayed-auto, it shouldn't prevent you from logging in while the Dedupe Engine is starting.

Running this command from your Windows CLI should help:

sc config spoold start= delayed-auto

NOTE: The delayed-auto is not available on Windows 2003, but since you're running Win 2k8, you should be ok.

Thanks Pete

This solves the problem where it never allows logon, but the service still takes over an hour to start.

Yes.  Depending on the amount of data you have backed to your deduplication storage, it could take some time to start up.

Glad that the issue with logging in has been resolved.
