Default Ports to open on Server 2008 & Win 7 PC's for SEP 12 SM
Hi,
Can someone please tell me what ports i should be opening on both my Server 2008 R2 as well as my Windows 7 PC's?
I am only a small home user with a server because i like to tiner and learn.
I have 5 workstation connected over a gigabit network.
My primary issue... when i download anything from the web to a network share, when it gets to 99% complete... it literally hangs for about 30 - 45 seconds before completing.
Moving or copying files from server to workstation or workstation to server is almost instant.
Downloading a file to workstataion completes almost instantly. But again, downloading directly to a network share, it hangs right at the last moment, for a long time.
This only began after upgrading my antivirus across my network to SEP 12 SB, so i "think" it's related.
On my network shares, i even opend up the mapping's share to EVERYONE with full control and file level security to EVERYONE also with full control and it does not resolve the issue.
Again, this is ONLY when d/l'ing from a workstation to a mapped drive.
D/L'ing from the server to the physical drive where i keep my software is also instant.
I have also turned off Windows Firewall on server and pc's and that did not help either.
Lastly, i tried turning on SEP's Firewall (and i noticed it then TURNED OFF ALL WINDOWS FIREWALL'S, INCLUDING THE SERVER's". IS THAT RIGHT? IS THAT SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN?
Anyhow, using SEP's firewall, also did not help.
Ok, one more thing, i also tweaked the default template for antivirus/spyware and intrusion protection from balanced to performance (lower security) and that didn't help.
So... 3 things:
1 - What are the default ports i should be opening on my server
2 - what are the default ports i should be opening on my workstations
3 - Is windows firewall automatically turned off by SEP when SEP's firewall utility is enabled
4 - Any idea on tweaks to addressing the downloading issue?
(Strangly, this did NOT happen when i was on Server 2003 SEP 12, it only started after first upgrading to Server 2008 AND THEN ONLY AFTER INSTALLING SEP 12).
Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi
1 - What are the default ports i should be opening on my server
if you have installed SEPM on default port then its the port number of default website needs to be open say 80, if its on custom say 8014 needs to be open on both the server and clients.
this port should be opened on your windows firewall.
2 - what are the default ports i should be opening on my workstations
same as above(1) , those ports should be opened its TCP port.
3 - Is windows firewall automatically turned off by SEP when SEP's firewall utility is enabled
Yes when you install SEP it will disable windows firewall for the very first time.once the system is rebooted windows firewall will be turned on

4 - Any idea on tweaks to addressing the downloading issue?
when you are downloading the file directly to shared folder, the actuall file will be copied to cache of system on which you have initiated the download, once it reaches 99 i needs to do a cyclic redundancy check to make sure things are in place and then copies the file to your share drive , try disabling SEP while downloading. The reason the download can't complete is because the anti-virus software is scanning the partial files and won't release them as your web browser attempts to create the single file from the multiple parts. SEP should not be causing any issues here
