Dell Optiplex 760 Boot CD, WONT BOOT
Updated: 21 May 2010 | 31 comments
The intel drivers off the dell site won't work with Ghost 11, it won't even boot up
I have used other bootable net boot to boot into ghost and it comes up with the wrong NIC.
The intel 825x seires off the dell site won't work via floopy, cd (iso image) and now testing with barts.
Anyone get a working ghost cd. I use ghost cast to do over 50 computers a day and I'm only having a problem with the 760
I wish that someone would make a bootable dell ghost cd for all models dells, but that would be asking for two much. The drivers keep being unable to load in packet and ncis mode.
Thanks

Yeah, DOS driver can be a pain in the... hence why we released GSS 2.5 (ghost 11.5) more than half year ago, which support Winpe and Linux in addition to DOS. You are more than welcome to give it a shot. Trial version is available from www.ghost.com - see if this helps you at all.
Cheers.
I believe those drivers are broadcom? I've had to go right to broadcoms site to get the driver and added them manually. Even though they say they are the same they are a bit different. We have similar models here that we ran into same issue with...now we have multiple boot cd's for different nics. We could put multiple drivers on single cd but dont have the time to mess with atm.
The Dell site says they are Intel 825x drivers but when i load heirns boot cd, it comes up as boardcom drivers and fails to load. It's very strange. Does anyone have a 760 Bootable Ghost CD that they can link me to?
My bad... i have 745's and they are broadcom...yours ARE Intel...
Try and download the NDIS drivers from here
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Default.aspx?lang=eng
and place them into your Ghost boot wizard to make another cd.
If your system is saying INTEL and when you boot its saying broadcom then you have the wrong drivers on the CD. You should get a message like "device can not bind"? or similar.
Good luck...it takes a bit out of you when you get new computers with different drivers. Its still MUCH better than the floppies of 6.5 and on...lol
Why don't you just pull the HDD from the 760, and put it in a computer you know will boot and ghost it that way? Then when the ghost is done put the HDD back. I know it takes a little longer, but thats better than nothing until you get your drivers worked out.
I'm going to assume that sinse he doesn't have the correct drivers then he never created an image for that machine type. I'm assuming he is still trying to create the image. If the image has already been created then thats a work around. Or you could just not care about network drivers and ghost peer to peer by slaving the client hard drive...then doubling every one you finish. Ahhh old school.... :)
I have done that, and it won't load the ghost.
I have a image server a dual xeon 4 gigs on raid with 360 gigs for all of my images, (I ghost via DHCP) i just can't get these new Dell 760's to boot up with network drivers so i can use ghost cast.
Does anyone who has used the 760 got it to with ghost cast and can they A
Show me what they did
or B upload the CD to free file hosting so i can see what I'm doing wrong.
I have to do 50 760's so taking out the drive will be a pain in the ass.
If you want to do it right the first time I suggest you look at the following site -
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/on-technology.nsf/docid/2000091914073125
It pretty much explains how to add NIC drivers into a multicast template or even just into the Ghost Boot Wizard. I've used it to add the Intel's 825xx drivers for the 755's. Below is my template(mcassist.cfg) that it created:
# This file is used by the Ghost Boot Wizard.
# You should not attempt to edit this file yourself
DRIVER-TYPE = NDIS
DRIVER-NAME = e1000.dos
NDIS-NAME = e1000$
RECEIVE-MODE = 0
DISPLAY = YES
TIMESTAMP = 1170213272
PCI-TAG = 8086 10BD : Intel 825XX
This file is located in the following on your server:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Ghost\Template\
Again, the website explains more - hope that helps!
FYI - I use a flash drive... much easier to manage than a CD and it's faster too!
Still not working at all, drivers error out when loading? Not binding.
Anyone have working drivers for a muti boot cd with intel 825 drivers that work?
Thanks
Greetings:
I also have a GX760 that I am unable to get to boot from the boot CD. I only have 1 PC now but have another 30 ordered. Any other suggestions to get the 760s to boot from the CD?
someone wanna send me a 760 and i'll mess with it? j/k I had a few problem machines, not your model, but i've have others. Have you tried the generic undi driver? What error are you getting exactly?
Another good thing to know is what version of ghost are you useing? Have you tried every thing that has been suggested on the last page? If so what were the results? What exact error are you getting at the moment?
Sorry i didn't think of this earlier...Worst case senario, before you would do a drive to drive job, would be to take a nic (pci) that would take your generic drivers already in your db and utilize this to ghost...granted its not the best job but I don't see anything else working. If i had a 745 to mess with i would fix it and help you out. I've never had to go beyond going to the manufacturer of the nic to get the ndis or dos driver to swap out on the floppies or boot wizard.
Just remember that if you take a working floppy and replace the dos driver you still need to change the other files inside the floppy like the config to point to the new driver name etc...
I really think with a bit more exploring you would be able to over come this. There are solutions within this thread that will work. You won't get much more from the symantec guys b/c they want you to buy the new product which works well with weird drivers. I really don't know what else to say. Send me a 745 too...lol I'll have your ghost disk working in a day.
Good luck Helpdesk... I'm unsubscribing to this thread...don't know what else to tell you. sorry mate.
Did you ever get this to work? I have an Optiplex 760 and I was able to get it to work. You need to use the latest Intel v13.5 dos driver e1000.dos. Make sure you put the e1000 in as the driver name when you set up the Driver Template and then just create an iso. That is all I did and it worked.
Where did you get the 13.5 Drivers? On intels site, there is no DOS driver listed to Download.
It is included in the full driver download (the 12MB file on the intel site). Search for the PRO2KXP_v13_5 file.
OK. I'll qualify this w/ I don't have a 760, but it sounds like the exact same issue w/ the Intel drivers as when the 755s came out. It sounds like the pro1000 driver works fine for these, but the multicard template isn't properly detecting the NIC. Please correct me if I'm wrong. All that's should be needed is adding the correct PCI-tag info to the mcassit.cfg file
Try this:
-navigate to \Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Ghost\Template\Intel PRO 1000\
-Open mcassist.cfg w/ notepad
-copy and paste the last line (something like PCI-TAG = 8086 10BD : Intel Pro 1000$)
-and replace the '10BD' w/ the correct PCI-TAG. You can look this up in the Windows device manager.
-then use the boot manager to create a new boot image w/ the multicard template and you should be good to go.
Please let me know if this works. We will probably be ordering some of these PCs within the next six months or so. Cheers.
btw. I get better performance w/ 755s using the Universal UNDI driver. You might want to give this a shot too.

Here is what I have found:
Casting via search_engine for ProDos usually gets a generic download or a device-category download which seldom has the nic.dos file we want.
However, whenever one can, one should try to specifically ID the NIC [in my case intel 82567] via ctrl panel using current opsys
Then one can go to the general nic guide at intel: http://www.intel.com/support/network/sb/cs-006103.htm & click on the link for PRODOS. This leads to a page with specific nics covered by the latest & greatest PRODOS http://downloadcenter.intel.com/detail_desc.aspx?ProductID=38&agr=Y&DwnldID=4239 .
Clicking on the 8256x link brings us to a similar looking download page with a more specific nic designation:
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Product_Filter.aspx?ProductID=999&lang=eng
and makes a ProDos download with more specifics -- prodosV13_5.exe which unpacked to a e1000.dos file from 11/3/2008
***
The moral of the story is that Intel updates the prodos zipped compilation of files and the e1000.dos files within with no external delimination. One must get the latest & greatest to have it work & to tell them apart view properties to get the date.
OK I got it!!!! After
OK I got it!!!! After spending all weeking trying to get this to work I foud the issue to be related to the fact that there are some updates to the ghost console. Make sure to have the console updated to the latest version. I am on version 11.5.0.2141 of the ghost bootdisk builder.
Download driver from dell website. save the file to a location on your computer and run this in the command line
<filename> /s /e /f <destination path>
Then add those drivers to the ghost winpe image and finish the wizzard. after I did this it worked out in the first shot!
If you have made modifications to your drivers database and cannot get it to work. Un-install ghost and re-install it. Make sure to delete the temporary folder that has the drivers.
c:\documents and settings\all users\application data\symantec\ghost\templates.
Hope this helps other people because this was driving me crazy. Verified that it works on a Optiplex 760. If this does not work call support and they will help you out.
I finally got to the bottom of this
Here is what I did:
Download the Intel Driver for the Intel 8256X series (VEN:8086 DEV:10DE) -- PRODOS_v14_0
Extract the files, find *\PRODOS_v14_0\PRO1000\DOS
In here you will find the e1000.dos (dated 1/27/2009) as well as oemsetup.inf (used in the Ghost Boot Wizard -- aka GBW)
Open GBW -> Network Boot Package -> Add -> NDIS Driver -> Setup
Here you will select the previously stated oemsetup.inf directory
Click OK then name the driver, I chose E1000
Create your boot disk
Enjoy your success.
Oh yes, and the link to the driver: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/confirm.aspx?httpD...
How about getting the same drivers to work in PE
I have added the drivers to the WinPe image via Boot Disk Creator.
From the ghost console I load the client no problem to the machine, but when I execute the task:
The machine boots to PE, but the driver fails to load.
It cannot get an IP Address and then repeatedly polls for the server.
I am having the same issue
I am having the same issue with Dell Optiplex 760 - any help would be appreciated!
760 NIC
I had the same issue upon recieving the 760s. If anyone is still having issues with this follow these steps and you should be fine.
Update Symantec Ghost Console.
Open the Ghost Console --> Help --> Live Update
Update until there are no more updates (was about 3x for me)
Now download the NIC driver from the dell website.
Extract the NIC and put it somewhere that your ghostcast server can access.
Add the NIC to your WINPE Image and SELECT IT before rebuilding the image (for some reason when you add a NIC it is not selected by default)
Put the boot image in your TFTP Directory (When Prompted)
And give it a good name for testing (I did 760).
Thats all it took.
Additional Information for 760 NiC
Here is some duplicated/additional information that may be useful. I created my disk about in the same mannor as SteveL.
I hope this gives you the rest of the information that you all need. Symatec tech support had me download the drivers form the intel website .
That helps...Will try
That helps...Will try that! Thanks all....
Update the 760 Bios
Yesterday I found some interesting information on a Citrix Site. The Optiplex 760 has an issue with Bios V. A02 where the inetgrated NIC times out with the network.
Dell has a new BIOS V. A03, it will correct the timeout of the NIC for PXE Boot.
I am booting to a PXE Boot Menu on a Optiplex 760 and the session times out waiting for a response from the PXEBoot server. The integrated NIC gets an IP address, but is very slow in responding and so the PXE Boot times out.
Bios A03 includes the following changes:
2.Update MRC code to 2.60
3.Update PXE Boot Agent to 1.3.27
4.Enhance Audio and Video performance in C-State
5.Admin and system password enhancement in SOL
6.Enhance Wave SW support.
7.Added TCM support.
I am currently testing this and will post an update shortly if this works.

You may have figured out the
You may have figured out the issue by now, but as you requested here is the boot disk I used for our 760's (ours have the intel pro 1000 card though)
http://www.sendspace.com/file/c9nq2o
This may not help you learn to fix the issue, but there have been times i just want it working NOW and ill figure things out later. I just created the iso using the ghost boot wizard tool and the drivers from the dell site.
Hope this helps!
Thanks

Boot CD - Peer to peer and Ghostcast options are greyed out.
Problem: 'Peer to peer and Ghostcast' options are greyed out
I have 50 computers (Dell Optiplex 760’s) to setup. - I’m desperately trying to get a ghost boot CD to work, so I can make an image of 1 HDD and then use that image on all the other machines.
I've used a ghost boot CD before on HP computers using the "Universal Packet driver" already on the Symantec boot wizard but as you all know by now the NIC on the 760's is a difficult one.
Using the Symantec ghost boot wizard (v 11.0.2) I'm creating a 'Network Boot Package' - Having added different drivers and trying to follow the instruction above, when I boot from the boot CD's I created the 'Peer to peer and Ghostcast' options are greyed out - Therefore I’m not able to create an image or restore an image.
I've tried the CD which 'Mikefletcher85' very kindly uploaded onto the web, but the CD does not boot all the way to the ghost console.
The network card on my Optiplex 760 is a: Intel 82567LM- 3 Gigabit
If anyone else has a working Ghost boot CD for the Dell Optiplex 760 could you please let me know which driver you added and how it was added using the 'Symantec Ghost Boot wizard'.
Alternatively it would be even better to host the.ISO file on sendspace.com (like mikefletcher did)
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers

I was having the same issue with an Optiplex 270 booting to an NDIS driver using a PXE boot menu. I found a new version of the driver and was able to view all the functions of the Ghost Console.
Optiplex 760 Boot Issue
After failing to create a Dell Optiplex 760 Boot Disk with suggestions from the forums, I called Ghost support.
Here is what I found out:
For a simple machine ( no RAID - single nic ) us PC-DOS
Use the Intel 14.5 DOS drivers from Intel site
use the switches under 'Client Type' --->> Parameters -fni -noide -nousb
in BIOS turn on nic with PXE
and
MOST IMPORTANT on SATA Operations use LEGACY - not AHCI or ATA ( this was the fix for me)
- Works Fine :-)
Similar issue
We can boot the Optiplex 760 from linux boot CD, but then Create Image job says "can't find disk". I'm assuming it means it can't find the Hard drive, and that it's probably an issue where we need to load up new drivers for SATA onto the linux disk image, but what drivers do we use???
FYI, we are not using Ghost as yet, we are on RDeploy (text) in version 6.9
Thanks!!
