Dell SAS tape drive not detected

Created: 27 Feb 2014 | 5 comments

Hi, I've been using a pc connected to an LTO 3 drive (quantum) which works fine, but I want to change over to a Dell LTO4-120, which is SAS.  I put the card in but the card isn't being detected at all by the OS which is windows server 2003.  I know the card and tape unit are good, because they were being used by a server.

Running through the symantec driver install  it doesn't detect the tape drive either.  Is there anything else I can try? I'm wondering if these Dell tape drives are only supported on dell server hardware.

Hello Jayfw,

The card has to be detected by the server before Backup Exec will see it.  What type of server is the other server that it works on?  Verify in the Tape drive's documentation to make sure it is compatible with Windows Server 2003

The previous server it worked on was a dell poweredge 2950, whereas I'm looking to put it on a cooler master pc.  The OS is defintely supported... I'm just wondering whether the tape drive allows itself to be installede on non-dell servers.

I've attached a screenshot with driver install which gives a list... but it seems a bit odd they'd lock a tape drive down to only one manufacturer? can these drivers be installed on non-dell servers?

You got to work this problem with Dell.  As previously advised, until the tape drive is recognised by Windows, it cannot be used by BE.

...I haven't seen that before with any vendor where they lock the hardware down to a specific make. They'd probably come out and say that you installed the hardware into an unsupported server/workstation and might only offer you limited support.

Put that card into the Dell PowerEdge server again if you can, or another server, and see if the library and card are picked up there.

This is your root issue.  Until the SAS card is seen by the OS and has working drivers, it doesn't matter what is connected to the card.  I suggest working with the SAS card manufacturer to determine OS support or locate a driver.
