  • 1.  deploy sep via altiris - possible to put packages on gup?

    Posted Jun 08, 2013 08:50 AM

    Hi

i need to deploy sep on client in different sites; every site has one GUP

From Symantec management console, i will deploy the sep 12 on client, and need to know if it's possible to make Altiris agent on client, receive the package from gup, and not from altiris.

if yes, i just need to copy tha package created from the SMP to the gup?

    (limiting the bandiwth and time)

    thanks

No it not possible. GUP is only use to getting the defintion. There is no othe role of GUP.

     Deploy through push deploy wizard.

You can copy the remote client setup and SEP Client package on remote site and use it to deploy

    HI, thanks for the answer,

but i have not been clear in the question:

what i need is to configure a storage area in the remote sites, to put there the Package (to limit bandiwth, i have more that 7000 client to deploy , over 50 site).

Then make some configuration that when i launch the deployment, agent retrieve the package from the local location (if it's possible i would prefer to store it on GUPs)

    Thanks

GUP is not provide the package to clients. GUP is only responisble to share the Defintion to the client which are reporting to package.

Client package is only forwarded by SEPM Server using Autoupgrade function or You can use the deployment wizard.

    You can deploy the package

Push Deployment Wizard is used when installing clients on a Remote Location where you have few systems but the bandwidth between 2 locations is very low and you are unable to install all the clients at one time.

    Thankx,

but the reason why we prefer to deploy throught altiris (against SEP remote Push) is that with Altiris i have more logs in the case somethink goes wrong.

The use of gup in this situation will be only for storage (to store the package that will be deployed to client on the site, as a local network share)

the questione is how (if somebody has already done that, how to configure (maybe a script or soemthing) the  altiris client to retrieve the package from a network share, and not from the Altiris server.

As per my suggestion you can choose the Remoteclient.exe to deploy the sep client

We use the Altiris to deploy but recieving from Altiris Server. Noe more effective.

You can configure your GUP systems as package servers.  However, Altiris and SEP are completely separate in this regard and the programs will not be aware of each other.

For what it's worth we've added the GUP functionality to our Package Servers.  No sense in making all of that extra disk space go to waste.

So should be able to add the GUP functionality on a Package Server.

But if i have already the GUP installed, i have to create a separate package server to configure then as a gup?

    (removing the actual gup)

So long as it's a Windows box (I recommend 2008R2) and it has enough drive space to sync your packages it will work as Altiris and SEP are completely separate products and the two functions will not interfere with each other.

The packages will sync to the same drive letter than you have your Altiris agent installed to so if you have a large D: drive then install the Altiris agent to D:.
