Deploy Symantec Antivirus
Hello,
Our company has been using Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 9 up until recently when the AV definitions have stopped. We now face a problem, in that we have 100 computers with this old software on it.
We would love to find an efficient method to deploy version 10.2, which we now have a copy of digitally as well on CD, to all of these computers. Is there anything that someone can recommend to me that would speed up this process? We DO have an FTP available, and have been thinking about hosting the installer files on the FTP if that would be our best option. If so, we would need to know exactly which files we would need in order to perform such an install. If we can eliminate files that are not needed that would speed up the process for anyone with a slow download speed.
Also, we would need an effective way to uninstall our current version if possible.
Any information is greatly appreciated.

Are you sure you don't want to think about migrating to SEP 11? I is really more advanced and SAV sooner or later will be discontinued.

I agree with Pawel that you
I agree with Pawel that you should forego with 10 and move on to Symantec Endpoint Protection. SAV 10 doesn't give the same protection and would also reach EOL/EOS in 2012. Seeing that you didn't upgrade since ver 9.0 (more than 3 years?). It would be more cost-effective to just skip one version and move on to the latest.
What is the lowest hardware specs available in your environment?

Very much appreciate all the
Very much appreciate all the feedback. To answer a few questions:
-We were eligible for an upgrade to SAV 10.2, so this was surely the most cost effective route for us.
-Our lowest hardware spec is an XP machine with 512RAM and I believe ~1.8GHz proc.
We definitely can't use a program that is very taxing on the machines. On the flip side, we will be slowly introducing Windows 7 machines into the environment and want to make sure this program would be compatible for that as well.
Getting us into 2012 without having to buy software would be nice. We're a state agency and it's not the easiest thing to purchase software.
On the other side of the coin, we are looking to upgrade our Antivirus on another set of computers that are more local to our environment. These machines have a wide array of specs, but most are XP or greater. We are looking for a program that can centrally manage computers that are local to our network.
If we can combine both solutions into one, we may be able to purchase some nice software. I would love to hear some recommendations for that -- software that can manage local and remote machines and monitor updates.
Overall, if we're able to combine a solution for both environments, we would be looking at around 100-150 licenses needed.
Thanks for all the help so far, and I look forward to hearing some recommendations.
If you're talking about
If you're talking about managing client from a centralized place Symantec Endpoint Protection 11 seems like a very good choice. It provides a wide variety of reports and real-time monitoring as well as email notifications, etc. Also, through IPS, firewall, application and device control and Proactive protection it introduces a new level of protection.
You may need to talk to sales but I think you should be albe to upgrade somehow SAV to SEP - I mean, the price will be lower than brand-new licenses. But this must be confirmed with sales department.

When you say that you might
RISOS - SEP 11 is less of a
RISOS - SEP 11 is less of a system hog than the SAVCE ever wanted to be. Symantec really did make a change in how Endpoint scans the system as compaired to the old Anti-virus suite. I used to hate loading Symantec Antivirus on a PC because I knew it would slow it down tremendously. If you got XP Machines that only have 512 megs of RAM then you're not going to gain anything by just upgrading your antivirus version. That's not case anymore with SEP. Seriously...look at upgrading to Symantec Endpoint Protection. You'll have full support ofr your XP and Windows 7 machines.
To add to Hitechgreg
The running foot print of SEP is indeed much lower then SAV. We have some very old hardware on desktops here and the upgrade from SAV to SEP improved performance on quite a few desktops. If anything you would gain performance by going to SEP over SAV. Just some food for thought.
