Deployment Solution 7.5 HF1 license failure

Created: 20 Nov 2013 | 8 comments

So I upgraded the CMS 7.5 installation to Hotfix 1.

Unfortunately, Deployment Solution 7.5 Hotfix 1 doesn't recognise the Deployment Solution license and has gone back to trial mode.

Pretty poor show when I have valid maintenance and licenses until 2015.

I've check the license certificates and confirmed that the Deployment Solution license is installed.

Services have been restarted.

Service call has been logged - now just waiting to see if Symantec can fix this before the trial expires!

Thankfully I haven't upgrade production yet!

There should be another license that is like Deployment Solution 7.5 without HF1 that has the original license count. I have seen this, too. I think this is just falsely displayed.

Sounds like the issue from this thread:

https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/blogs/itms...

Issue have been resolved. New PL file have been uploaded to SolutionSam.

open SIM >
Go to Settings >
Update SIM PL - "Click Update Now" >
After This back to main SIM select "Add/Update licenses" >
Verify that no "Deployment Solution HF1 Trial Licenses" are listed.

The new PL does in part resolve the problem.  However, the licenses are still an issue within the product and can be seen in the First Time Use page that shows the licenses.  That said, we have not yet seen any long-term effects of this issue.  That is, the product appears to continue to run even after the trial licenses expire.  The issue appears to be purely cosmetic, but more research is needed for how to clean it up.

I'm having to wait for an official "fix" or valid workaround from Symantec Support such as reverting the productguid in the product table.

In the meantime: http://www.symantec.com/docs/HOWTO9763

This issue kills off Deployment Solution altogether whenever you have: More than the 10 eval nodes OR the trial license period expires.

So right now I'm completely dead with Deployment Solution in this environment - with a deadline looming to have this functional.

My advice:

Don't apply DS HF1 if you haven't already done so. If you have, roll back - if you can....

Hi all,

I see same problem on "First Time Setup" portal page after upgrade from CMS 7.5 release to 7.5 HF1

3_0.JPG

But if you will open SIM -> LIcenses -> You will see that DS 7.5 uses full license.

Additional information:

1. Before upgrade to 7.5 HF1 I've installed full license:

  • I've installed ULM Agent on  Linux Server and then installed DS plug-ins. Verified that 1 license node was consumed after (for example "Configure Computer" task execution for this managed Linux Server).

2. After upgrade to 7.5.HF1 version full license is preserved.

  • I've installed ULM Agent on new 2nd Linux Server and then installed DS plug-ins. Verified that 2nd license node was consumed after (for example "Configure Computer" task execution for this managed Linux Server).

And I see that 2nd License node is consumed from Full license and isn't from DS HF1 trial license therefore seems like it is really only an issue that it shows DS HF1 trial in "First Time Setup" portal page.

Also you can check license consuming using SQL query:

For full license DS 7.5:

SELECT IsTrial,TotalCount,LicenseInUseCount,LicensingPolicyInUseCount FROM LicenseStatus WHERE ProductGuid='2C9A27A0-A5B4-4D9E-9D5B-B2E0A3FA99E5'

For trial license of DS 7.5 HF1:
SELECT IsTrial,TotalCount,LicenseInUseCount,LicensingPolicyInUseCount FROM LicenseStatus WHERE ProductGuid='04F44650-7428-4613-90FC-B327A0D7B392'

Thanks,

IP.

I cleared out all licenses with the RemoveLicense.exe tool and checkt the certificate stores. Everything was clean. We reinstalled the licenses. There seems to be no negative effect on the environment after updateing the PL in SIM.

So far, we have no confirmed reports of failures due to the license issue.  Yes, we do have reports of failures (translation, I'm not dismissing those who say they are down) but in calls, those who have called in have found the failures to be different from the actual license issue.  I should qualify that statment with "that I'm aware of".  Note, since I'm the backline engineer here, there are few if any issues that are called in and can't be fixed that I miss.  We've been discussing this issue daily with Development and again, so far, no confirmed issues with the license problem.

So, what should you do?  Test, confirm, and CALL if you are down.  Don't just roll-back.  And of course, ALWAYS test in the lab before you roll to production.  The HF1 release did fix some issues that were really important to some customers, so simply skipping it may not be a good option, especially if you can continue working.

How to test this?  First, look for Quick Delivery tasks in your jobs, and if you have them, pull them and test again.  Second, boot to automation and try ONLY a deploy-image task to see if you get a license failure.  Third, try copy file tasks as well, in production, to ensure that it's not your automation environment (copy-file tasks also rely on the DS license).  Fourth, be SURE you're getting a license failure.  This failure should appear immediately, either before you schedule it, or RIGHT AFTER you do a quick-run.  If the license is the issue, the task will never fire.  Fifth, make a call to support so we can verify what you're seeing.  We NEED to know this so we can talk with development, so don't just stick it out, call us!

Thanks!

Thank you very much for that!

I eventually called in and have been told this is a known issue.

There is a tech note for it:

DS 7.5: KNOWN ISSUE: After applying HF1, a new "version" of DS appears in the license list with only temporary licenses.
