This issue has been solved. See solution.

I am currently evaluating Altiris 7 for deployment in our company and ran into a snag in the test environment.  Every system we deploy the Software Managment Solution Agent too gets stuck in an endless detection check loop and eventually crashes with a "C++" error. (I don't have the error on the screen at the momment to give any further details)

The Task Histrory shows hundreds of entries with the "Detrection check for Software Managment Solution Agent 7.0.1291.0 - English (United States)" task execution successfully two to three times a second with the return code of "2".

Any Ideas?

Do you have this delivery set

Do you have this delivery set up as a delivery policy during a scheduled window?  If so, look at your settings for the "During Window, Check Every".  If this not set properly, we have found our machines do a detection check at less than desirable intervals.

Do the logs on the machine offer any more information?  What information are the logs reporting?

Software portal agent issue instead of Software management

You’re all are talking about the Software Management Agent policy, but in a situation with a customer of ours the error of the endless loop is in the software portal agent. (As displayed in attached screendump.) Could you please verify your situation?

Also the wmiprvse.exe process is slowing down the Windows XP SP2 and Windows XP SP3 machines.

The Software Management agent is installed fine and software distribution is working. The only thing is that the software portal agent is not getting on the machine due to above error.

Any idea’s?

We ended up rebuilding our

We ended up rebuilding our Altiris 7 server from the metal up due to a VMWare malfunction and oddly this time the issue is gone.  Not by any means an ideal solution but for this instance it appears to have worked.
