Detection rules for titles imported from the Software Catalog Data Provider?

  • 1.  Detection rules for titles imported from the Software Catalog Data Provider?

I've heard how great the Software Management Framework is in various forum postings and user group meetings, and I really want to drink the Kool-Aid but I'm having trouble after playing with it a little bit in my test environment.

I've gone to Data Provider Summary (Manage..Software..Data Provider Summary), searched for Project 2003 to return 6 results: 3 for Project 2003 Standard and 3 for Project 2003 Professional (Why three of the same product??)  I went ahead and imported the data and package of all six items (even though there are no packages associated with these)  After each item was imported, it disappeared from the list.

I jumped up to the Software Catalog and searched for Project 2003 to list the Project's that I just imported.  I was hoping that this would have imported detection rules for each of them, but it looks like it only brought over the version, company and software product and nothing else.

    So, a few questions:
    1. Did I do something wrong?
    2. Is there a secret stash of detection rules for these 86,000+ software titles that are in the data provider?
    3. Am I expected to define detection rules for EACH piece of software in my library by hand?

    dfrancis,

Did you get an answer for this one?

    Kind regards,

    dfrancis,

As far as I think, I understand that Detection Rules that have no Files attached to them are detecting applications from their entries in the Add and Remove Programs entry in the Uninstall String of the registry.

Can anyone confirm or deny this?
