Device Licensing Error

Hi,

I'm using a Quantum Superloader 3 unit with BE running on Server 2003. This unit takes two 8 slot magazines but at the moment I'm only using one. I'm getting alerts in BE saying the following:

Library Expansion Option Violation!

This server is licensed to support 1 tape drive in robotic libraries. However, the number of tape drives currently in use exceeds the license. You must purchase additional Library Expansion Options, or disable 14 tape drives. Please refer to product documentation for more information.

Under Devices - Robotic Libraries, I have a "Quantum 1" and below that I have "Certance 1" and "Slots". Slots shows me the eight slots in the installed magazine.

Windows Device Manager shows me 15 "Certance Ultrium 2 SCSI Sequential Devices" under "Tape Drives" which I presume is the cause of the problem.

What's the best way to deal with this? I'm guessing it's Windows driver related but I really don't want to mess about with the current drivers as the system appears to be working and backing up correctly as it is and I'd rather not break it!

Do I have any other options? Can I safely disable 14 tape drives in device manager?

I'm not expert, but it might be down to how the tape library is configured. It might be that the Superloader is reporting itself a 15 separate drives, rather than one library with 16 slots.

That's a fair point. I'm probably better speaking to Quantum regarding this one. I just don't want to make any driver changes now that I've got the thing working!

Check your SCSI ID on the tape drive. It sounds like its set to the same ID as the SCSI card.

Watch it when it boots up and determine how many devices it sees.

Also make sure you enable 'Multiple LUN support' on the SCSI adapter. Its usually off by default.

If its on SCSI ID 7 that is the default for most SCSI cards.

Hello,

Kindly perform the following and check:

Follow a Power Cycle

1. Shutdown the Server

2. Power-down the Library

3. Power the Library up.

4. Reboot the Server

Thank You,

Shweta

Hi,

Sorry for delay in replying, had other problems to deal with :)

I've changed the SCSI ID to 8, I'll let you know if that improves anything.

Andy.

Yeah Baby!

Now I'm only getting one device entry in Device Manager so I expect my licensing error alerts will go away. Cheers Jimi X.

Did find a rather nasty 10d bug during this. I changed the autoloader SCSI ID through the unit's web interface from 7 to 8 and rebooted the unit. This came back up fine but the unit was now marked as "Offline" in BE. In "Devices" I right-clicked on the unit name and tried to bring it Online. This crashed the BE interface on three separate occasions. No error messages, the app just closed down. Restarting all BE services got BE to detect the unit as online again.

Andy.
