This issue has been solved. See solution.

Is it possible to use an array-based/hardware snapshot to backup DFSR ?
Does it still go through the Microsoft DFSR VSS Writer ?

Hi John.
It looks like the MS VSS DFSR Writer is the only game available:

If you are referring to the array-based/hardware snapshot to alternate client off-host backup method, then

yes and yes.

If your array is listed under the VSS section in the Nbu Snapshot Client Compatibility List, then just follow the instructions in the Nbu Snapshot Client guide (7.5 here; 7.6 here) to setup alternate client off-host backup.

During a backup, the Microsoft DFSR VSS Writer, then the array vendor's VSS Provider will be called by NetBackup.
The main thing is to get the array vendor's VSS Provider working on the DFS server(s). Test this before moving on to NetBackup.

Caveat: If your DFS runs on Dynamic Disks, then this type of backup method is not supported by NetBackup. Only Basic Disk volumes are supported. I doubt Windows Server 2012 Storage Spaces would work either, but haven't tested it.
