The difference between apid release and certified symantec updates?

I have a windows 2003 server. The virus definitions always seem to lag behind the rest of the network. The server runs the Symantec client and Information Foundation Agents Mail security for Exchange. I changed the download to chose rapid release today and the virus definitions are finally the latest available. The setting was set to certified downloads before and the definitions were a couple of days old. Before that they were about 2 weeks old. What is the difference between rapid release and Certified updates? If there are no differences why have the option? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Sameer

hi

Rapid release definitions are not fully certified and therefore must be manually applied to clients or manually installed to the their manager, as they are not applied via LiveUpdate
