Difference between Expiring the Media Id and Expiring the Images
Hi,
I really confused about this Expiration of Media Id and Images in the Media. For eg: one of the user requested to take a backup of a data and ask me to keep it for 1 year...So i created a policy with Retention period of 12 months...once backup completed in the Tape ...I checked the details ./bpimagelist -m ..shows the retention period of 1 year ...ok fine...Now my doubt is .....After one year ....will the Data(client) inside the tape will expire OR the catalog(database information about the client, media Id)...? After one year if user is asking that data .,...can i able to recover through 2 phases of import process?? Moreover i cant understand ....there is Image Expiration , Data Expiration ,Media ID expiration..... Guys .,... Pls Can you Discuss and give me a clear pictiure of those....
I believe..
There is an expiry date for the images (the data), this is set by the policy which does that backup. When all the images on a tape expire, then this tape becomes available for use again, ie. becomes scratch. At this time the information about what is on that tape is purged from the database. The images (data) on the tape do not actually delete themselves, they are still on the tape and can be imported if need be, but if the tape expires and the tape is in the drive (or robot) then it can be overwritten once it becomes scratch; so if you need to keep data after 1 year, then you should set a larger retention of that policy, eg. 7 years etc.
There is also an expiry date which can be associated with a tape, this is to stop a tape being used after a period of time, eg. after 5 years.
I think I've got this right, if someone could verify..
James.
James, absolutely correct.

Sounds good to me.

Hi james ...
You are correct ..... Yes the tape will become scratch tape....we use to insert those scratch medias inside the lib weekly once...so then datas(images) will be overwriten by the new datas.... My question here is will if those images(datas) not overwriten means .... is there any retention period can we set or predefined for that??. Can we find any document related to expiration of Media ID,Images, Catalogs?...If yes ...pls give the link
Thanks
