  • 1.  Difference between PGP9.8 V4.0 to PGP 8.1 V1.0

    Posted Jun 05, 2013 10:03 PM

    Hi Guys,

We have an application that does not load/execute if PGP9.8 V4.0 is running, however the same application runs when PGP9.8 V4.0 is uninstalled
and PGP8.1 V1.0 is installed. ***This PGP desktop by the way...

Seeing that we haven't been able to get a fix from the vendor for other application, We were looking at uninstalling PGP9.8 and replacing it with PGP8.1. However prior to completing this we need to identify what is the difference between both versions and also Advantages/Dis-advantages.

I have tired to find comparison specs for both software version online without any success and you guys are my only option.

    Please advise...

    Regards,

    Vin

Not exactly what you are looking for, but this may help:

I wouldn't really suggest using 9 year old PGP software (8.1).   I'm not surprised that you would have conflicts with such old versions.

That is like replacing a broken microwave with an open fire.  Can't later versions of PGP do the job or is this application that you're trying to get working as old too?

Thanks Guys, the issue is that we have an application that work without any issues before PGP is installed and after PGP is installed the application does not lunch at all and keeps raising the following error "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc00000005). Click on OK to terminate the application".

Since we saw this application works with PGP 8.1 we thought maybe it would be easier to degrade the version of PGP. PGP is only used to decrypt one encypted file on daily basis, apart from that PGP is not required at all by the user.

Is it possible to stop PGP or something like that.

    Thanks in Advance,

    Vin

I'm a Windows user, and using a much more recent version than yourself, so I'm not sure you have this option, but hope you do, and that this will work for you.  I can click on the PGP tray (notification area) icon, and select Exit PGP Services.  If this lets you use the needed application, you may still be able to do the file decryption without restarting PGP Services; but if not, I believe you can easily restart them by simply launching the PGP Desktop application.

For your 9.8 version, you might benefit from this Knowledge Base Article:

    http://www.symantec.com/docs/HOWTO84112

If you use this for a reinstall that does not include any of the components you don't need, it may discontinue the problematic situation.

For such light chores, why not just install GPG4Win?  Then you can uninstall PGP and eliminate your software conflict.

It's either that, or pony up the bucks for the latest Symantec PGP.
