differential backup on a mac

When we run a differential backup on a mac (Mac OS X 10.5.8 9L30) it takes as long as running a regular full backup. Is this normal?
Running backup exec 12.5 with latest updates
Which setting for
Which setting for differential jobs are you using? - as differential with Archive Bit will only work on operating systems that have file systems which support the archive bit
changed to dfferential by
changed to dfferential by time and still takes as long as a regular full backup
Any thing else i can try
