Discover Data to Back Up options

Created: 11 Sep 2013 | 7 comments

We just updated Backup Exec 2012.

And, we got new option about Discover Data to Back Up options.

Manual shows us that every 12:00 noon starts to searches for data that needs to be backed up.

However, it seems that starts every 9:00am on our server.

Please let us know why it starts at different time as default.

Thank you

Is the BE services restarted at 9 a.m.?

Also, check the interval setting which determines when the discovery process starts.

Hi,

Under the options for Discover Data for Backup, check the Interval setting and see what time shows there. You should be able to change this under that setting.

Thanks!

Hello,

Thank you very much for your replies.

Let me explain more;

* Discover Data for Backup Setting is default.

Frequency - Daily,   Interval - 12:00:00

We have checked that manual and discovery operation of BE runs at noon every day.

The server reboot at 9:00pm on one day, because BE updated to 2012 from lower version.  After this work, it starts to flow syn packet from BE Server at every 9:00am.   Also, we discoverd that syn packet sending from BE option which is that discover data for Backup Setting.

We would like to know why it has been started at 9:00am.

Thank you very much for your help.

Ok so probably not a timezone issue

When you mention syn packets are you referring to traffic inbound on port 6101 to the media server as if you are this packet is remote agent advertising and not data discovery so is a different process.

EDIT: I just chedcked our data discovetry notes from when we first added it to Backup Exec - we do data discovery as follows:

–Daily at Noon – This is the default value and can be changed by changing the Data Discovery Schedule

–When the services are restarted (this should only be on service restart it should not repeatedly trigger at the same time each day)

–When the Data Discovery registry values are changed (as we don't publish these reg keys I dount if you have done this)

Thank you very much for you reply.

I have one question for your comment.

When the services are restarted, that discovering service has started.  However, it should be only one time and not repeatedly.  Our server had sent syn packets 9:00AM everyday until the system reboot.  We did reboot our server last week and it has been started at 9:20AM.  After that, that discovering service is sending syn packet at 9:20AM everyday now.

What do you think about it?

Also, we checked which ports are using, and found that discovering service of BE use port#135 and port#445 to send syn packets.

Thank you very much for your help.
