Disk Usage almost Full
Updated: 21 May 2010 | 5 comments
Hi people,
Our Brightmail is getting a massive SPAM attack, the hard disk is getting almost full... i don't know what and how to delete from Brightmail Web interface.
Trying to discover the source to fix the SPAM attack, but untill the situation is OK, the Disk Usage will still getting bigger.
Can someone help ? Any clues ?
Thanks,
Carlos Oliveira

Hello,
Do you know what is taking up the disc space? Are you quarantining spam, suspect spam, etc? If so, you may wnat to go with an action such as delete on spam and only quarantine things like suspect spam.
A couple other cluprits can be logging or reporting. You could try clearing your logs or reports to see how much space this saves. You should be able to do this from either the user interface or the command line using the "clear" command with the proper switches.
Hope this helps.

Hi TomC 2, thanks a lot
Hi TomC 2, thanks a lot for answering.
Indeed, we are quarantining spam. I tried to discover how to set sizes or days to limit the store, and even tried to manually delete some older SPAM that might be stored, but i did not find where to do such actions.
Do you know that ?
Thanks again.

Hey Carlos,
Sorry, what version of the product are you using?
If it is version 8 of the appliance, you can find these settings under the Spam tab in the Quarantine settings. All of the limitations are under the Expunger settings.
Thanks!
It is version 8.0.1, i
It is version 8.0.1, i will take a look now...
Thanks a lot !

Just to add
Hi Carlos,
Just to clean things up from any prior older issues you were having, you might want to try connecting to the appliance via ssh or the command line and running the 'crawler' command and then the 'deleter -all' command, if you had some older issues this could be using some disk space.
Just curious about one more thing, from your experience do you feel the need to actually quarantine spam? The solution is very accurate so maybe you might want to look at just deleting spam and quarantining suspected spam. Can you distinguish between the two currently? It might be worth changing your suspected spam policy to tag the subject with suspected spam and then quarantine, you'll get a much better idea then on the difference between the two and hopefullly you'll be comfortable enough to just delete spam and maybe quarantine suspected spam for further review.
Hope that helps,
Kevin
