  • 1.  Distribution list expansion and preserve recipient address settings

    Posted Jan 28, 2009 12:07 PM

    Hi there,

Would anyone please explain me regarding the distribution list expansion and preserve recipient address setting? I have read the admin guide but I have not found an example these settings. I am confused about primary address, recipient alias, distribution list (it's group membership, isn't it?).

    I am running SBG 7.7.

    Thanks in advance,

    Nitass

    Hello Nitass,

Really the only thing these settings do is change the way our Message Transformation Engine (MTE) handles the messages. If you check the Distribution List Expansion option we will bifurcate (split up) the message and act on it on a per recipient basis instead of the message as a whole. Your mail server will then be responsible for bifurcating the message once it is received if you do not enable this option.

Preserver Recipient Addresses keeps our MTE from changing a recipient address in line if it is aliased within LDAP. Not really much else to that.

    Hope this helps!

    Hi Tom,

Thanks for your reply. Thus, it seems that I should enable both of them, shouldn't I?

    Thanks,

    Nitass

Sorry, I'm confused about group and distribution list. What're they different? Could anyone advise me please?

    Thanks,

    Nitass

    Hello again Nitass,

So I guess it really depends on what you mean by "group". A distribution list, (what we are dealing with and what is effected by the checkbox) is just an LDAP listing of users within that attribute.

So as an example sending to finance@yourdomain.local translates through LDAP to be user1@yourdomain.local, user2@yourdomain.local, and user3@yourdomain.local. With this checkbox checked, we will split "finance@yourdomain.local" into the respective members of that group and scan them individually. Otherwise we will treat that message as a single message and scan it as a single message.

If the message is sent without us expanding the distribution list, your ending mail server will bifurcate the message itself instead of us splitting it up prior to being sent.

Does this clear things up at all? I'm sorry if I am not understanding you.

    Thanks!

    Tom

I beleive that this would affect Compliance Policy triggering.

If you don't split the message, and have a policy that affect User2@yourdomain.local, the policy won't trigger because the SMS box doesn't know the message is for User2, just that it's for finance@yourdomain.local.
