  • 1.  DLP, diff btw SSN and EIN?

    Posted Apr 24, 2014 12:18 PM

    Hi,

In DLP12, assuming there are no hyphens present, is there any way to tell that a number is a business EIN, or if it is a personal SSN?  I've read somewhere that there actually are overlapping numbers out there. Any kind of regex that could be used to tell the diff between the two?

    Thanks,

We have found that for independant contractors and some small companys the EIN is their personal social security number, so they are very difficult to weed out.  The only way we have had any success is by using keyword exceptions to except out numbers that come after EIN: or EIN- .

    Bangker,

SSN and EIN have the same number of digits and EIN's do overlap with SSN's. So unfortunately there is no way to differentiate them other than using a different Keyword to match along with the numbers. So instead of looking for 'SSN or Socila Security" look for "EIN or Employer Identification Number"

Here is more info on EIN's:

An Employer Identification Number (EIN), also known as a Federal Tax Identification Number, is used to identify a business entity.

Prior to 2001, the first two digits of an EIN (the EIN Prefix) indicated the business was located in a particular geographic area. In 2001, EIN assignment was centralized, although all 10 campuses can assign an EIN, if necessary.

As a result of the centralization effort, the EIN prefix no longer has the same significance. The EIN prefix now only indicates which campus assigned the EIN. Each campus has certain prefixes available for use, as well as prefixes that are solely for use by the online application and the Small Business Administration. The prefix breakdown is shown in the table below:
