Do Backup's of VM's on VMware with NetBackup 7.0 require a Windows server?

Created: 19 Dec 2012 • Updated: 05 Jan 2013 | 1 comment
This issue has been solved. See solution.

We currently have only Linux servers. I have tried to configure NetBackup to make VMware back-ups the last time, but I stumbled on multiple errors. One of which that mentioned a Windows-based proxy.

Later I was searching on the internet and spent more time reading documentation and I read that a Windows-based proxy is or used to be needed.

  • Can somebody tell me when NetBackup requires a Windows-based proxy?
  • Do I need one with NetBackup 7.0 on CentOS?

Yes, NBU 7.0, 7.1 and up to requires a Windows backup host.

It can be a VM, but then VM backups will use network for backup.

See NBU 7.0 for VMware Guide   for detailed requirements and HOWTO info. VM host as backup server uses hotadd transfer type - details in the manual.

SUSE 10 and 11 is supported as backup host as from
