Just wondering if, when GUPs are configured, whether the clients report their definitions / system status to GUPs or directly back to the SEPM? Any help is greatly appreciated!

It's reporting to SEPM for all Type reports.
GUP only provide virus defination all of report and policy handaling by sepm
GUP is not interested in SEP clients virus definitions version or their status at all - everything is reported to SEPM, Client will get the information about the available definitions from SEPM as well - and then if need request it from GUP.
GUP is only work as a distribution point and forward the definition to clients as per heartbeat.
Client are geting policy/report directly from SEPM Server.
