  • 1.  Do I need to have a license to install the Image created via the coldbackup

    Posted Nov 16, 2010 04:12 PM

All the answers that I get from the forums assumes that the Ghost SW is installed on the source machine and the image includes the host SW inside.

We're developing an application that runs on the Tablet PC.

Each time we need to provide a new version to the customers (or we get a new customer) I create the image of the baseline tablet PC (with our application inside) and then production line gyus deploys that image to the customer's computer. The source machine is the same machine each time (we just update the application or drivers).

We're working with a Ghost 15.0 and creating the baseline image using the cold backup (means I'm booting the computer from the Ghost CD and create the HD image). The important point is that teh Ghost SW is not installed on the baseline computer or on the customer's computer.

The question is: do we need to buy Ghost 15.0 license for each image we deploy to the customer even thow the Ghost SW is not included in it?

Another question is: if we provides a copy (DVD) of the image (not the Ghost SW!) to the customer as a Resque disk - do we or customer need to buy any license for that?

I'll be glad to have a Ghost licensing terms (joining to the mluser request)

    Thank you in advance

Ghost 15 is Norton Ghost as far as I am aware, and this product is NOT supported in the GHOST SOLUTION SUITE software forum, which is based on different technology.

I believe the standard licensing conditions require a ghost license for each machine where an image has been created or deployed using Ghost. The license terms can normally be found as part of the product shipment, on the CD and in the packaging if a retail copy is purchased.

Producing an image requires a license of ghost. If you give the image to someone else, there is no license required until the point where the image is to be deployed to a system, at which point you will need a license for each system being deployed to.

Note that WinPE includes an imaging tool called imagex.exe

Since WinPE is a free download from Microsoft, the tool can be used without any license requirements either.

Check out Adventures with WinPE Symantec Connect for some information on how to work with free WinPE.

Unfortunately I didn't found the Ghost 15 forum (or any Norton Ghost forum) to put my question there. Could you, please, send me the link to that forum?

From you post I understand that the Ghost Solution Suite DOES NOT support the Ghost15 images. Is that correct?

I'll try the imagex.exe tool - is it similar to Ghost15 cold backup?

Look at the top posting - the one that says "If you are seeking Norton Ghost Support"

That is the "sticky" at the top of the forum that I referred to in my previous posting. The link is in there.

Ghost solution suite and Norton Ghost are different products so the images are not interchangeable.

I do not know what Ghost 15 cold backup does, so I cannot comment on whether imagex is similar. To use Imagex, you boot into WinPE and run the command from the WinPE command prompt. Your operating system is not running at this time so can be backed up in its entirety.
