  • 1.  Do unmanaged clients get updates when off network?

    Posted Oct 15, 2013 08:08 AM

For our employees who have laptops we install the unmanaged client so they are still protected when they leave campus. My question is when they are not connected here at our campus are they still receiving the updated definitions?

An unmanaged client does not communicate with a management server and an administrator does not manage the client.

The unmanged client can get the Liveupdate from internet

    Hello,

The unmanaged clients can get definitions from internet, if enabled.

Incase if this is only 1 or few unmanaged client machines, then you could update these clients Manually by Downloading and Running the Intelligent updater which would update the Definitions.

    Check this Article:

How to update definitions for Symantec Endpoint Protection using the Intelligent Updater

    http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH102606

The below articles tell you how to do this:

Using Intelligent Updater files to update client virus and security risk definitions

How to manually update definitions for a managed Symantec Endpoint Protection Client using the .jdb file

The above article will need to be used with this article (http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH105498) to get the unmanaged client to allow 3rd party content distribution.

However, incase if you are carrying a Number of Unmanaged clients, then you may need to take assistance of Liveupdate Administrator Utility.

Check these Articles below to update:

So pretty much as long as they can connect to the Internet they can open symantec and select live update and get the updated definitions themselves?

    Hello,

Correct. As much as the machines can connect to the internet, they would be able to download the defintion updates.

You can either schedule it OR manually click on "Liveupdate" button to manually update itself.

In case of SEP 12.1, please check out the below link:

You simply need to configure the policy so that when clients go OFF network they can connect to symantec liveupdate and grab the updates
