  • 1.  Does 6.x R13 touch the Altiris DB?

    Posted Jul 28, 2011 02:15 PM

    Good afternoon,

I am planning my R13 upgrades to our Environment. Our NS's are currently running R11. I have read through the release notes and trying to determine if the rollup modifies the existing Altiris database in any way? Does anyone know if this is the case? If this is the case it changes my change control process completely.

Any information would be much appreciated.

    Thank you

there are cosmetic changes like adding new collections (Windows 7, 2008) and other features like that. More importantly, you want to take a look at the R12 release notes as well, since all hotfixes are cumulative.

Based on the changes between the two, I'm going to say "Yes, the database is touched". That's why I alwasy backup the DB prior to installing a hotfix.

Always back up the DB before a migration/upgrade/etc.

Yep. That's a given. This is based on having to deal with DBA's on some deeper more sensitive subjects :).

Love your DBA.  Hug your DBA.  Buy your DBA pizza.  Buy your DBA beer.  And then ask them for better SQL performance!

The good news is I don't think I've seen any posts here on Connect where someone reported "R13 blew up my NS!". It is a fairly safe upgrade. But be sure you also apply the other Solution updates which were released alongside the actual SP3 R13 update, including Inventory Solution, etc. Those DO make potentially impactful changes to the DB (again not removing any columns from tables, but maybe adding new ones and/or changing indices).

We migrated from R8 to R13 for Windows 7 support, and we faced some issues in the migration.

This migration was long time ago, so I don't remember the exact details, but we had some time-out issues when updating some big tables (our database is holding information of ~ 100.000 devices). We also had some issues related to a character field being changed into a date field.

So, yes, there are DB changes ;)
