Does BE push or pull data

Hi all,
Im trying to re-architect our backup network to increase throughput, and i need to know how BE transfers data from its source, to a nominated backup server.
Who initiates contact, and does the BE server pull the data down, or does the nominated server 'push' or send the data to the BE server?

The media server initiates
The media server initiates contact, to the Remote Agent service on the remote machine
The remote agent does local reads, and then streams the data back to the media server.
