does NBU support inlineNDMP backup?
Created: 20 Nov 2012 | 11 comments
Seems NBU doesn't suport inline backups for NDMP. we are currently using vault duplication to make seconary copy. Can someone explain to me why NBU (or NDMP) doesn't support inline copy? Is there any better than vault duplication to make our secondary?
Normally we use inline backups to keep the primary to local VTL and second to tape for Iron Mountain.
thanks.

hi
you can use the SLP to make the secondary copy.its better then vault to manage the images, as long as you dont have backlogs.
what is the method that you are using to have the NDMP backup
local, 3 way or remote methods?
if we could know the method that you are following to have the backup, we could suggest better..
thanks for your information.
We are using remote method. the tape library is attached on media server for multiple purposes. we do have a few NAS devices on each site.
cool,
in this case... i would prefer SLP or Vault to have the secondary copy then the Inline option.
becase you does not need to have long window time as inline tape copy option. and also you can make offline duplication with SLP and Vault.
SLP is better and advanced when compater to Vault.
so try SLP, and check how it works..
thanks for your update.
we used a lot of inline backups since VTL comes in. i thought the backup data queued and we only have to run it once to have two or more copies done. any other thoughts?
with out inline copy, we can hope for some performance improvement..
SLP also would do the same, and also it will never let expire the image with out duplicating..
and you can let the duplications happend out side the backup window...
please check the attached best practice for more info about the SLP

I agree with Nagalla.SLP is much better then inline copy.SLP gives you a gurantee for Duplication...
thanks for all your information. looks we do need SLP in near furture. BTW, how is license for SLP. is it drive/media/master based?
SLP includeds in base netbackup license, it does not require seperate license. so you can go ahead and start testing..

SLP supports Media Manager storage unit, so you can use SLP in conjunction with tapes without additional license.

I have a question about SLP. When it does it's duplication, does it append images onto a tape like Vault does, or does it create a new tape for each backup policy? Also, can I segregate NDPM copies to one tape and Standard backups to another? We have been using Vault for years but we have stood up three new Netbackup installations in three different locations across the country and the company buyers did not get Vault so I am looking at SLP to do what Vault does. Thanks for your consideration
Dalewhit,
You should create new discussion for questions for your own business. For now, I will answer here.
It is same with other backups. If some tapes exist in destination STU and volume pool that is already allocated for backups with same retension, duplicated images will be appended to these tapes.
It is possible by configuring SLP with a volume pool dedicated for NDMP data.
