You are correct that it requires the infrastructure platform.  ESX Server at a minimum and preferably Virtual Center.  Will not work for VMWare Server.

Couple more questions.  Does it require a SAN between the backup server and the esx server.  So far I have installed vmware converter and VCB on the backup server, I can see the esxi server from backupexec but cannot connect to it, it prompts for login credentials but I am not sure which credentials to use.  I tried the system account and the admin account for the esxi server.

I tried configuring the config.js files for vcb also but am not sure if I did that right.

I haven't found much documentation on getting this setup in 12.5.
