I currently own SEP 11 and have learned that I can't run it on the Release Candidate of Windows Server 20120.  Does SEP 12 function on this server yet?  I'd be interested in upgrading if I can confirm that it is able to work properly.

    Thanks,

    Hi Mark,

Windows Server 2012 is the server version of Windows 8.  Here's a little info about it, including estimated release dates, from a quick Internet search:

    http://rcpmag.com/articles/2011/02/01/the-2011-microsoft-product-roadmap.aspx#server8

There is at present no SEP version which runs on Windows 8.  "Thumbs up" to the suggestions above about the beta of SEP 12.1 RU2.  Also, you may wish to show your support by voting for this enhancement request:

I doubt most software/application vendor able to answer this question now....

They just released their Release Candidate of the product.  It's been in the works for years and Syamntec has had several builds made available to them to avoid just this kind of delay.

As far as I know there might be a chance even its unsupported at the moment to have SEP running on the W2K12 and Win8.

Just Whitedraw and make sure that Application and Device Control isnt installed and activated.

This might bring the system in state which will at least survive and not have consistent bluescreens etc due to the krnl drivers.

At least in my tests it is stable after some crashed at the beginning

So yesterday Microsoft announced that Server 2012/Windows 8 will be fully completed and released to their license customers on the first week of August.  Since this is the second week of July that gives Symantec three weeks to get started working on this.  We had to wait over a year when 2008 R2 came out before Symantec Antivirus worked predictably on that OS, how long will they make their customers wait this time?

I have tested two other AV solutions since I posted the original note and both of those work flawlessly, how come Symantec seems to hate their customers so much?

Believe me, Symantec have been watching Micrcosoft's release schedule for Windows 8 like a hawk and are working hard to create a quality release that supports Windows 8.

We have already had selected customers test SEP 12 RU2 on Windows 8 and hope to have a general beta release available soon.

So please sign up for the Beta! The best way to ensure SEP 12 RU2 "works flawlessly" is to let us know if you find any issues with the Beta.

Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 are already RTM and available for Microsoft partners and volume customers.

If you would be so kind, could you share the names of the other products you have evaluated?  I would like to evaluate them too.  I am not willing to wait a long time for SEP to be stable and working on Windows 8, so it'd be nice to have a "Plan B" in case SEP 12.1 RU2 is still buggy when it eventually shows up as a production build.

  • 17.  RE: Does SEP 12 work on Windows Sever 2012?

    Posted Oct 24, 2012 11:44 PM

Folks, Windows 8 is due for general release in less than two days.  As an Enterprise customer, I have had the final version of Windows 8 since August.  I have been able to thorougly test all of my line-of-business and 3rd-party apps....except perhaps the most important, Symantec Endpoint Protection.

We have new business units launching that would greatly benefit from some Windows 8 features such as DirectAccess (yes, I know DA works with 7 but its impletementation is a nightmare) but not having SEP available is keeping us from being able to deploy Windows 8.  I'm sorry, but I'm not interested in deploying dozens of field laptops with a "BETA" antivirus product and then having to manage migrating them to the production build once it comes out.

At this point, Symantec is holding back my business, not enabling it, and had we not fairly recently renewed support for SEP I would 100% be gone.  It's inexcusable to me for a company the size of Symantec to not have a stable, tested, working production build out well in advance of the Windows 8 general release date.

If SEP does not support Windows 8 very soon, I will make the business case to my management to drop it entirely and eat the support cost for the remainder of the term.

It is very delayed to come to market 10 days after the release of Win 8. Microsoft partners had access to RTM's for nearly 2 months now on both Windows 8 and Server 2012 and still no antivirus solution solution from Symantec.Holding back Windows 8 rollout and holding back sales. Sad story this is.

  • 22.  RE: Does SEP 12 work on Windows Sever 2012?

    Posted Oct 29, 2012 12:57 PM

Well at least as long as there is no official final version built of Windows 8, you can't really expect that the release of SEP 12.1 RU2 will be available because we never know what sort of changes can be done during that time.

And it is somewhat important to avoid any epic failure because of recent changes done in Microsoft side ;-)

  • 23.  RE: Does SEP 12 work on Windows Sever 2012?

    Posted Oct 29, 2012 01:58 PM

Unless you know something that no other vendor does, this is a rubbish answer.  I have had, though Microsoft, the final RTM build of Windows 8 Enterprise since August.  RTM means exactly what it stands for -- released to manufacturing -- and that it will not change before general release.  I am sure Symantec have had access to the RTM code even longer than that.

This delay has held up enterprise customers who wanted to use the period between Microsoft releasing the RTM code and the general availability date to evaluate their images and devices and be ready to support Windows 8 when it hit the store shelves.  Now, when asked by our management why we can't support an operating system that is IN GENERAL RELASE, our answer is one word -- Symantec.  Also, by not having the released product in the hands of enterprises doing just such evaluation Symantec themselves are behind the curve.  Surely there will be some bugs to work out but that's what Microsoft's long and transparent development period is for.

Symantec has failed in their partnership with enterprise customers, and ultimtately they have failed Microsoft too.  I am proceeding with my Windows 8 rollout with another vendor's product, at least until Symantec's product is stable (in software, "Quailty is Job 1.1").  If I really like the other vendors product, and so far it seems fine, then SEP will fade away in my environment as support expires.

  • 24.  RE: Does SEP 12 work on Windows Sever 2012?

    Posted Oct 29, 2012 02:21 PM

Agreed it's a disappointment SEP 12.1 RU2 isn't out for Windows 8 on Day One (like it was for Windows 2008).

The reason for the 'delay' is all about quality. Feedback from the beta 2 and internal rollouts (Symantec's IT deploys SEP pre-release to thousands of employees before going RTM) showed SEP 12.1 RU2, while good, should have a little more polishing before being released. Believe me, Symantec is under a lot of pressure from customers and our own management to release SEP on the Windows 8 GA date, and I think the SEP teams stand on quality, even in the face of missing the Windows 8 release date, really shows how dedicated they are to the quality of the product.

We do not want SEP 12.1 RU2 to be a "Release now and patch later" product. It will have high quality right out of the gate.

So if release date is all you care about, I agree Symantec was not on target this time around.
But if you want a quality product with one of the highest detection rates, lowest false positives, with 'signatureless' zeroday protection that doesn't impede your work -- the feedback from our Beta customers say Symantec is on track.

    Ghent,

So does that mean SEP 12.1.2 comes out today (Nov. 6th) as Symantec has suggested, or are we going to wait even longer? I'm having to use "free" antivirus, which isn't nearly as effective as SEP 12.1.1 has been for our Win7 and 2008 R2 servers. I know "Security Essentials" is included by MS on Win8 and 2012 server, but don't trust that much either.

So, today? Or if not, then when? I like to plan things. :)

It is Nov 6th - release date. Has it been released yet? I haven't see an upgrade notification yet. Windows 8/Server 2012 have been out for over two months for Software Assurance customers. Pitiful, just pitiful.

  • 28.  RE: Does SEP 12 work on Windows Sever 2012?

    Posted Nov 06, 2012 01:17 PM

Ghent, that's at least a better answer than the previous ones in this thread which made it seem like the expectation of SEP meeting the Windows 8 release date was unusual or unreasonable.  I appreciate the response, and I agree that it's better to release a slightly-late (well....a little more than slightly in my opinion...) quality product than a timely buggy mess.

Let's hope for the best with 12.1.2.

What we all want to know is, when will it be released? We've had the released version of Windows 8 and Server 2012 for over two months now. Yes, those with Software Assurance have had the released product since August. We can't begin to deploy either until we have some kind of malware protection for them, and right now Symantec has let us down - big time.

General release for Windows 8 and Server 2012 was two weeks ago, so everyone now has the ability to deploy, but can't because they don't have malware protection.

  • 33.  RE: Does SEP 12 work on Windows Sever 2012?

    Posted Nov 07, 2012 02:45 PM

I think I like how MaRRuT@CC put it in a related post: "nearly 99% that it will be available for download [this November]"

If we knew when it would be released, well, we would know; and proceed to make an official announcement. The reason you haven't seen such an announcement is because, well, we don't know. We know it helps our customers to be able to predict a date. At this point, stating the date of the release would be speculation. Obviously, by now Nov 6th has come and gone and SEP 12.1 RU2 isn't on the street.

SEP usually has a "RTM" date, and a "GA" date. Once RTM is announce, then GA should be known and follow closely behind. So I'm sure once the RTM criteria is finally hit, you will know what day the bits will be available to you.

Symantec is litterly working around the clock and around the world to get this product out the door WITH quality.

  • 34.  RE: Does SEP 12 work on Windows Sever 2012?

    Posted Nov 07, 2012 02:49 PM

As a side note, Windows 8 wasn't like supporting "Release 2" of Windows 2008, or a service pack. Under the hood there are some big technology steps, and making a product that works on the driver level for something like this was a pretty massive effort.

  • 35.  RE: Does SEP 12 work on Windows Sever 2012?

    Posted Nov 07, 2012 03:34 PM

FWIW, maybe the definition of "not supported" should be defined.

We have SEP 12.1 RU1 running on multiple 2012 and Windows 8 machines and have not had any issues to this point.

Does "not supported" mean you're on your own if an issue arises? Or does it mean it shouldn't install? (Obviously I know it does)

  • 37.  RE: Does SEP 12 work on Windows Sever 2012?

I'll install a beta product on a beta OS. I'll install a beta product on a release OS in a lab. But I won't install a beta product on a production OS.

RU2 has not been released, and just like the OS, we have to wait for the released product to test it prior to putting it into a production environment.

So please stop telling us about this magical RU2 beta. We know the beta is out there. We need the released product so we can proceed with our testing.

In my opinion, the delay in RU2 is worsened by the fact that all 11.x and 12.0 versions are vulnerable to .cab scanning deal. I'm trying to hold off on some plans until RU2 comes out, but may be forced to change them due to the .cab deal. This will result in extra work, as i'll have to end up making 2 transitions. And since we don't have a date for the release date, I can't plan. I just have to react.

I've been watching this thread for some time now. Our project is essentially on hold until RU2 is released.

Can a Symantec employee please confirm the RU2 release date that EssKay mentions?

    John,

For us in Oceania it will effectively be the 16th November as Symantec releases are done in the USA PST timezone (GMT -8:00). So at best it will be very late this evening.

    Hi,

In case you see SEP 12.1 RU2 available for download then it might be in English Edition only.

For local languages you might have to wait for few more days. (Probably till 30th Nov'12)

It's unfathomable that Symantec Backup Exec 2012 still does not support Server 2012.  We bought two server licenses back in November with 1yr contracts each, not understanding that BE "2012" would not work with Server "2012".  So we spent $1200 on a product we can't use, and Symantec refused to extend our 1 year service contract.  Yearh, I know, we should have looked deeper into it before trusting that a 2012 product would work with a 2012 server product.  So shame on us.  But to not even entertain the idea of extending our 1yr contract?  I haven't even activated or installed the product yet.  They just took our money and said too bad.  I've had these licenses since November 2012 and not a single instal, activation, nor have I even extracted the program from the compressed files I received.

So by the time the BE 2012 R2 update comes out (the beta is not even available yet) our contract will be up.  This will absolutely be my last Symantec purchase of any kind.  I've already ousted Symantec AV for another vendor, and will never come back!  I might just trash BE and cut my losses with a better, more workable vendor who understands that misakes can happen to even long tenured IT staff like myself.  18 years in the business. Symantec just said too bad.  We've got your money, so live with your mistake.  So I am, and I will.

This must have been very frustrating. There have been massive changes in Symantec Management Team in the last few months and you would most certainly see changes about how things are handled soon. Let me assure you that the Beta for adding supportability for Server 2012 would be released sometime this month and you would be able to apply those patches and start backing up Server 2012 machines.

I have requested someone from the Backup Exec Product Management Team to address your concern on this post.

    Hi Jlamark -

Would it make a difference if I told you that we will cover your next year of maintenance at no cost?  I DMed you my contact information so we can discuss the details on that.

The beta is set to begin in the next 2 weeks.  You can join here if you are interested.  It is all about platform support including Windows Server 2012 & vSphere 5.1

All I was looking for back when this was first realized was either an extension to our 1yr service contract or a freeze on it until an update was released that would work.  This was back in December, when I realized Backup Exec 2012 wouldn't work with Server 2012.  I spoke with two different Symantec associates, one in support and one in accounts management back in early to mid December and they told me that because we purchased 2 licenses for servers that the product did not support we couldn't get any type of extension or freeze on our 1yr contract.  I already tried to get this done about 6 months ago and Symantec said no.  I am on the BETA test list for Backup Exec 2012 R2, and have been waiting for that release since late December.

So ultimately, yes, it is my fault for not looking into the issue with BE2012 and Server 2012, but I was so busy with the Server 2012 licenses, the IBM SystemX servers and their configurations, and all the CAL licensing, that I just assumed that Symantec BE2012 would work..  It should be on record that I have not installed or ever used or activated my license on any servers.  I appreciate the offer to extend our 1yr service contract, and I will give you my purchase and licensing info via PM.

    Thank you,

    Jarret LaMark

I would really apprciate either an extention, or just a freeze on the contract.  I'm not looking to get anything more than what I paid for.  If my 1 year contract runs out a year from the day a working release became available I would be just fine with that.  I just want to be able to use the product on my two 2012 servers, and have the service contact for the year the product is usable.  I'm on the beta test list, and hopefully that will be out soon.  It is May, and we are waiting.  I couldn't find any "DM" with contact info.  Would you mind pointing me to where that would be?  I appreciate it.  And thank you for reaching out.  The last two Symantec associates I spoke with in Decemeber were not as forgiving or understanding of my mistake.
