  • 1.  Does SEP Console deploy install packages automatically?

    Posted Dec 01, 2010 09:27 PM

I added a package to our SEP console to a group of x64bit servers. I was going to discuss it with stake holders and deploy it when they were ready.

The next day I was told that xx amount of servers had received this package!

I understood that the install package has to be "pushed" to ensure the installation takes place.

I would appreaciate if someone can let me know whether the SEP management console automatically pushes installation packages out?

    regards

Thank you for the info, but I just added the Install Package to the Client Group.

I did not want it deployed.

As far as I was aware, one had to click the installation package and click "update" to send the package to clients.

    Any input on this?

    Thanks

If you assigned the package to the group, it will be downloaded by clients in this group that are of older version. Could you be more specific and tell us, step-by-step, how you "just added the Install Package to the Client Group"?

If you assign a package to the group..That means all the clients from that group will be upgraded from that install package.

However you can export a package and save it on your server so that you can deploy it later.

If you've added a package to the "Install Packages" tab of a group anyone that is moved in there will auto upgrade to that package without you selecting the client and right clicking "update". To avoid this move them all to the new group but don't put any packages in the "Install Packages" tab until everything has been confirmed for you to upgrade.

The "update" button is for forcing a client to heart beat earlier and apply a new policy before thier normal heart beat schedule. so for example you may have clients set to heart beat to the manager every 4 hours and you then move them to a new group with a new policy you'd put them in there nad hit "update" to force the new policy to them earlier.

Adding the client install package to the client group without an upgrade schedule means that as clients start to check in, they will start to receive the update.  Adding the package to the group is initiating the update.  This is essentially what the "Upgrade Groups with Package" wizard does, the one mentioned at the end of all migration documents.

Remove the package from the client group if you don't wish to upgrade any further machines.

Actually, that is incorrect.  The Update Content command sends a LiveUpdate command to the client or group. This appears on page 76 of the Admin Guide:

    Command
    Update Content

    Description
Updates content on clients by initiating a LiveUpdate session on
the clients. The clients receive the latest content from Symantec
    LiveUpdate.
See “Running LiveUpdate on a client from the console” on page 162.

Did you mean something else by the "Update" button?
