We are using Symantec Web Gateway in inline blocking mode. Does SWG fail open?

    Thanks

Yes, we have specially designed NICs that fail open even in the event of a power loss. If the services crashes or becomes unstable it will go into bypass mode which will allow traffic through.

This is not the case if we are running on a Virtual Machine where we do not have the special hardware needed to achieve this.

The web gateway only fails open in span/tap and inline mode and inline only on the physicall applaince as TSE-JDavis said before.

Also if you are in proxy mode it does can not fail open.
