  • 1.  does x64 Windows 7 image require x64 PXE ?

We currently use Altiris DS 6.9 SP3, and most of our PXE configs are x86, and use WinPE 2.1

The laptop for which I am building an image is a Lenovo T400, so its CPU is an Intel Core2 Duo, 4GB RAM.  We are using Windows 7 Enterprise.  Originally we based the image build on the x86 version of Windows 7, and we used an x86 PXE config.

Now I have built another image on the same model of laptop, but this time based on the x64 version of Windows 7.

My question is:  do I need to prepare an x64 PXE config (with x64 NIC drivers) in order to create an image of the x64 Windows 7 laptop build (and subsequently deploy that image onto matching hardware)?  Or, can I keep using the x86 PXE config when I create and distribute the x64 Windows 7 image?

    Thank you,
    PB

You can use 32bit WinPE to deploy 64bit OS.

    It depend.

If you use Ghost or Rdeploy you can use the x86 PXE.
For imageX and unattended rollout of Windows 7 you will need to use x64.

It depends on your imaging tool, if it is x86 application it will require Win x86 PE and x64 bit will req. Win x64.

There is no effect of which OS image you are capturing.

When dealing with images it does not matter what WinPE preboot you use.  It only matters if you do a OS Scripted install where u have to match the architecture.
