Doing a mailbox item restore (box, email, etc.) shows nothing but backups are verified

Created: 10 Jan 2013 • Updated: 15 Jan 2013 | 11 comments
This issue has been solved. See solution.

I am testing my restores. i've been out for about a week (using BE2012 and loving it). So i'm doing test restores. When I expand the last four days (it's actually all since 12.27.12) there is no data shown:

The 6th(it showed same right after this screenshot) 7, 8 and one instance of the 9th (the other worked more on that in a minute) show nothing. However I did a one time backup yesterday (9th) and as you can see everything is there. My issue is that when I check the log files for the 6, 7, 8 and 9 it shows 40.8 GB of data and the backups have actually ran:

wondering if anything jumps out to anyone. If need be I can do a restore from the OTB on the 9th but obviously I'm confused about, since the data was backed up, why it isn't showing. This is ALL B2D

Hello,

Create the registry key as suggested in following technote run a new backup and check if you are able to browse the selections.

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH198298

NOTE: set the value to 1 and not 2.

If this resolves the issue then you can subscribe to the technote and wait for the fix and continue with the above workaround meanwhile.

Hello Gossett

Would you be able to post the job log of one the the jobs that youre refering to? Say the 6th for example.

Additionally. Are the scheduled backups and the one time backups being written to the same location?

and did you verify that the scheduled backup jobs have GRT enabled?

I hope this posting was helpful

Here is the job log: i could only get it in text (i'm not very good at this) so if it's unreadable i'll work on getting another log. This is from the 6th. I did try the solution suggested by SBOLA but I screwed up and will try again:

Was this a fresh install or was it an upgrade from 2012. Have you tried recreating the backup job. Try to create a new backup job with the same selections and stages. Run this job and attempt to restore data. please report whether or not your able to view the data.

I hope this posting was helpful

I'll check that out and try it. For the record it was working. It was working just fine and right before the New Year. Out of curiosity i'll ask if the move to 2013 would have any effect.

Hello Gossett,

Seems to me like issue with delayed catalog, refer the technote i provided earlier. http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH198298

Delayed catalog runs only once in 24 hours. So if you run another exchange backup to disk within 24 hours of previous backup, the delayed catalog will not run and hence the one time backup of 9th is browseable.

To confirm run another backup immediately after the scheduled one and try to browse that.

Another way to confirm is to disable delayed catalog by setting registry as suggested in the technote to 1.

Thank You,

Gossett's picture

I did disable delayed calalog as per your technote. My backups are almost 24 hours apart they start at 10pm every nite. As I said previously though this had been working. I'm more concerned of 'why' it just started this: i'd made no changes at all for 3 months anyway. The only thing I haven't done yet is delete and re create the job. I'm going to do that today. My next question is: I know the data is here; we can see it. How do I get restore to work if I can't browse to it (or is it just not able to be done until I fix this)?

Donald Eady's picture

Please let us know how recreating the job works for you. If you know that the data is there and your just unable to do a GRT restore you a can restore the entire database or you can restore "depending on the version of exchange" to a Recovery database or Recovery Storage Group and from here you would be able to pull the individual items you wanted to restore

I hope this posting was helpful

Well i'll thank all of you guys as i'm not sure which solution worked!! I am able to browse out now. I created a new job from current one and modded it for what I needed. Came in this morning and going to do a test restore and all is well. Thank you all very much!!!

Hello Gossett,

Please subscribe for email notification to this technote http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH198298

Disabling delayed cataloging is just a workaround and once this issue is fixed (you will receive email notification) and then you can re-enable it.

Thanks,

I'am having the same problem with Exchange 2010 and BE2012

Not able to browse mail db, except the first mail db that was created...

Disable delayed cataloging solved the problem, - but if i run a catalog job, it's not prossible to browse/restore mails items.
