  • 1.  DS 6.9 SP4. WinPE 2.1. No drivers listed for new PXE Boot Disk.

    Hi all,
I'm experiencing an issue that I believe was supposed to be fixed back in SP2. When I go to create a WinPE 2.1 Boot Disk, there are no drivers listed (0/0) and cannot add any manually (I'm using Vista drivers too).

Bit of background. This isn't a new install, it's the same DS that's been upgraded from 6.5 until now using 6.9 SP4. However we 'leapfrogged' Vista, so weve been using WinPE 1.6 all this time. I have our Win7 SOE deploying with a WinPE 1.6 boot disk atm.

It looks like deploying to AHCI disks is simpler with 2.1, which is why I'm trying to upgrade our deployment jobs to use a 2.1 boot image.

The SP4 upgrade and WinPE 2.1 install worked without a problem. In the
express\Bootwiz\platforms\Winpe2\x86\Drivers\std\Drivers folder I can see all the folders containing the nic drivers. So they are installed, just not visable when using the Boot Disk Creator utility to create a new WINPE2.1 boot disk. Also the 'Loading driver information....' phase takes a very long time.

I noticed this issue when we were on SP3. I was hoping upgrading to SP4 would resolve it.

Hope this is a simple one for someone out there.

    Cheers,
    Brett.

Try cleaning out the temp folder of your administrator profile (or whatever profile you are logged in as when you get this problem). Then try again. You see when  Boot Disk Creator gets to the bit where its loading the driver information is actually doing a lot of work. Its grabbing the WinPE WIM file from the UNC path \\DSSERVER\ express\WAIK\Tools\x86\winpe.wim and expanding it out into the profiles temp folder.

Then it will hunt through  \\DSSERVER\ express\bootwiz\Platforms\Winpe2\x86\Drivers for drivers added by Altiris.

If your temp profile is full, this process might have problems.

Alternatively, you could possibly have some legacy permissions problems somewhere in the express hierarchy.  Download Process Monitor from Microsoft (Mark Russovich's tool) and see what Bootwiz.exe process is up to using a filter. While its "Loading Driver Information" see if its getting any access denied or other error messages. You should pretty much see SUCCESS as the result of the all the directory actions if all your permissions are configured correctly.
