  • 1.  DS 6.9 SP5 MR3

I wanted to throw this one out to the community to see who has actually performed this upgrade.

Since MR3 has been released - http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH201480, I did have a few questions.

    a) Does the FRM file download work for anyone else?

    b) Since the winpe automation environments are not in the KB, are we to use the ones from MR2

    c) Did this version support Windows 8 and SQL 2012? I didnt see it specified in the release notes ....

    Thanks

    a) I can't speak to that one personally as I have not upgraded as of yet.

    b) I'm not seeing MR3 files as being available for download on the Symantec site (but I know sometimes they are made available elsewhere).  My suggestion would be to try it with MR2 automation environment and if that doesn't work and you can't find the files for MR3, contact support to find out where the files are or if they aren't out there yet, when they might be released.

    c) Here is the document regarding 6.9 and Windows 8 (http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=DOC6299).  The release notes also state that this version provides support for SQL 2012 (http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=DOC6300&actp=search&viewlocale=en_US&searchid=1358431380804)

Amusingly or depressingly depending on your viewpoint, the WinPE files haven't changed since 2008, so yes... until Altiris/Symantec actually supports WinPE 3 or 4 natively, use any set of WinPE files from 6.8 on, they're all the same, bit by bit.

I downloaded the FRM file and installer from the FTP site and that worked fine, with Linux and Freedos properly creating boot files. Server 2008 R2 is failing to create WinPE boot files for me through the PXE Configurator, but that appears to be a different issue... some undocumented change required to make Bootwiz actually run correctly through the network. Ah well.

The FTP links for DS 6.9 SP5 MR3 follow...
    Main folder.
    DS Installer.
    FRM boot files.

Edit: Oh, and since I forgot to mention it, yes, MR3 does provide limited support for Windows 8 and Server 2012. It doesn't support remote installations or scripted installs, but won't choke up your whole server anymore.

    a) Does the FRM file download work for anyone else? I've heard others had a problem too. Please try the FTP download. On that note however, I've heard that download has errors. Support is investigating these issues and hopefully will have them fixed soon. b) Since the winpe automation environments are not in the KB, are we to use the ones from MR2 Yes, WinPE has not changed since MR2, so use the same ones (that can be found on the Symatec Trialware website) c) Did this version support Windows 8 and SQL 2012? I didnt see it specified in the release notes .... Page 8 of the Release Notes, under the "What's new" section is stated: "now supports SQL Server 2012" and then shortly after that says "For more information regarding Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 support, see the following article: http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC6193" (http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC6300). You'll notice that the KB article DOC6193 says it's for SMP 7.1, but you'll find a link to 6.9-specifics, here's the direct link: http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC6299

Guys - Thanks for the FTP links. I appreciate that.

I also pinged my SE and some support people and what they said echoes this thread. MR3 is primarily bug fixes and none could tell me what its only advertised in the KB. *shrug*

I wanted to perform a swing server migration with the latest bits so its good to see the opinions / thoughts of others.

Shame you can only mark 1 as a good solution.

    Cheers

I suppose WinPE must get from MR2 download, using TRIAL download,

(because FileConnect does not provide anymore link to DS 6.9 :( All the same not yet EOL... angry)

    thanks a lot your post
