DS 7.6 Boot to WinPE Fails in Job

  • 1.  DS 7.6 Boot to WinPE Fails in Job

    Posted Mar 07, 2015 03:06 PM

    Hello all,

I had this same issue in DS 7.5.1 HF5 and was unable to resolve the issue - now I've done a completely clean, fresh install of DS 7.6 and continue to have the same issue.  I have an open case with Symantec but am hoping someone in the community might have a solution.

If I run a job starting with "Boot to Automation," the PC will reboot to WinPE but the job will time out on the Notification Server.  If I run a task to "Boot to Automation," the task will complete and I can the run additional tasks manually.  If I boot to WinPE via PXE to an unmanaged computer, the computer will pick up the Initial Deployment job and complete without issues.

From the PECTAgent log files on the client machine within WinPE, it looks to me like the Notification Server is giving an invalid machine GUID when booting into PE within a job - whereas the NS gives the proper GUID when booting into PE from a manual task.

The Altiris Log Viewer also constantly shows this error: The handler 'GetClientTaskServers' is failed to process request. Called by unknown endpoint '9e74b794-655b-4ac6-b17f-1325701ab09c'.

This issue is driving me absolutely crazy, so I would really appreciate any guidance to resolution.

    Things I've tried...

    1) Recreating tasks / job
    2) Applying Pointfix3699627 in DS 7.5.1 HF5 to fix AeXBasicInventory.dll
    3) Recreating WinPE
    4) Upgrading to DS 7.6
    5) Reinstalling agent on client PC.
    6) Reinstalling from scratch
    7) Rebuilding Windows Server 2008 R2 and installing fresh DS 7.6

Thanks everyone.  I'll update this post if Symantec provides a resolution also.

I am running into same issue with fresh install of SMP 7.6 on Windows 2012 R2.

My case was escalated today to the dev team.... so we will need to wait for them to resolve.  You may want to call in a support case so they are aware that I'm not the only one having this issue.... unless they are check here :)

Hi. I have this issue after an upgrade CMS from 7.5 to 7.6.

My solution was to remove and add the jobs from the job menu in the Initial Deployment Settings.

It was like the deployment job died out because it didnt contain anything.

    Hi

I've seen the same error message on my 7.6 HF2 test env.
I have fixed it with reinstalling the Deployment Task Server Handler. Found under. D:\Altiris\Altiris Agent\Agents\SoftwareManagement\Software Delivery\{B5786691-3E11-4FCB-9F18-831EEB5C778C}\cache
    and reinstalled with TaskHandlerInstall_x64.bat /i

I have problems with predefined computers when running jobs / tasks in automation. Anyone has seen similar problems? Or anyone seen this working fine? I am using 7.6 HF4.

I ran into a similar situation. It might sound simple, but apparently this error can be caused by registration policies. In my case, the error was the same ("The handler 'GetClientTaskServers' is failed to process request. Called by unknown endpoint") and my test workstation was failing to get tasks while in the Automation/WinPE environment. When I was investigating, I found that the machine was "pending" registration (through the Agent Registration Status report). As soon as I manually allowed the agent to be registered (using the same report) and then restarted the PECTAgent executable in my WinPE, the machine instantly started to pick up the queued tasks.

According to Agent Registration policy page, "Agents not matching Allow or Block policies will be marked Pending". In my configuration here I was filtering the registration by IP address, and it seems that the WinPE agent was sending a registration request with no IP or MAC, etc.

I'm still trying to understand this scenario, but this could be your problem too.

    Cheers,

    Victor.

    Hi

I had the same issue and found that the Task server was missing the Deployment Task Server plug-in.
